Taryn Banfield: Webster University women’s soccer star

ST. LOUIS — The Webster University soccer teams have garnered a ton of recognition over the past few weeks.

On Oct. 18, Webster University announced that three Gorloks soccer players had earned the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week Award for Oct. 11-17.

One of those players was Taryn Banfield, a junior goalie from Plano, Texas, who earned Defensive Player of the Week for the women’s soccer team.

She certainly dazzled on defense over the past week. She racked up a total of 16 saves in two games, with 13 of them coming in a 1-1 tie against Fontbonne and three in a 1-0 win over Spalding on Oct. 16. She leads the SLIAC in save percentage at .828, fifth in saves with 48 and second in goals against with 10. She also leads in goals against average with 72%.

All of this has culminated in Banfield winning her sixth career Player of the Week award and third of the season thus far.

Soccer runs in the family for Banfield. Her cousins, Amanda and Austin are currently playing college soccer. Austin plays Division II soccer at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania, while Amanda plays for Seton Hall University.

Banfield played club soccer prior to college. As a member of the Sting, she helped guide her team to the state cup, where they would finish as the runner-up in 2017. That same year, she was a Region III Championship quarterfinalist.

At Plano East High School, Banfield was a two-sport athlete, playing tennis in addition to soccer. As a soccer player, she was a three-time All-District selection, earning first team honors in her junior and senior years, and second team in her sophomore year. She was also MVP for the varsity team in all three of those years, while winning MVP at the Forney Tournament in her senior year.

In 2019, her freshman year at Webster University, she burst onto the scene immediately. She recorded at least five saves in seven matches. She racked up 14 of them in a game against Washington University in September. She ranks fifth in school history in saves with 79 total in her freshman year. She allowed just 13 goals in 20 matches that season.

Now, Banfield has built herself a quite impressive soccer resume. She ranks fourth in school history with an .859 save percentage and is tied for tenth in wins with 14. With another Player of the Week award in her back pocket, the accolades continue to grow.
