The tales of Napa football star Brock Bowers

NAPA, Calif. — William Shakespeare said, “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” Indeed, Shakespeare would have had a change of thought if he had met Brock Bowers.

Bowers has played a lot of positions including tight end, running back, wide receiver, linebacker and punt returner, yet he mastered them all with great skill. He is a “master of all” in this regard.

“I grew up watching John Boyett play, and that’s honestly why I wanted to play football,” Bowers said. “He was probably one of my biggest inspirations in the football world. Watching him go and play at Oregon was really cool for me.”

This inspiration led Bowers to top individual awards. In 2019, he won the award for Napa County Football Player of the Year. Boyett won this award during his time.

Bowers’ dedication and hard work didn’t go unnoticed. “Brock is a special talent and a special young man,” Napa coach Richie Wessman said. “He’s got the work ethic you dream of. He does it on and off the field. He’s got over a 4.2 GPA. He just takes care of business day in and day out. … He’s a great kid, hard worker and absolutely deserving of the award, and he’s done it in all phases of the game.”

Bowers’ dedication and successes on the gridiron didn’t affect his performance in classes, as he still maintained an excellent GPA. He also received more awards in the same year. He was awarded as the Vine Valley Athletic League Most Valuable Player. He was also awarded the NCS Junior of the Year and an All-Metro first team player. These awards garnered attention both from the media and potential college visits. However, his focus wasn’t swayed by this attention.

“He kind of has that old-school mentality where he likes it, he’s excited about it, but he just wants to play football,” Wessman said proudly. “He did a great job putting all that hype and all that excitement on the backburner during the season and focusing on football. Now I think he’s taken a bigger peek at what’s out there and where he might want to go. I think he’s doing it perfectly, where by the start of next season, he’ll have his list cut down or maybe chosen, and that’s the right way to do it.”

It isn’t much of a surprise that Bowers is excelling in his chosen field of sport. Sports enthusiasts have always surrounded him. His mother played for the softball team, while his father was a football player as well. His older sister is following in the footsteps of her mother while he follows his father’s path.

Bowers has started his journey with these talents and stellar performances. Only time will tell where his potential will bring him.
