SPU’s Divant’e Moffitt voted Preseason Player of the Year

SEATTLE, Wash. — As the Seattle Pacific University (SPU) men’s basketball team prepares for their fast-approaching season, returning guard Divant’e Moffitt has been voted the Preseason Player of the Year by Great Northwest Athletic Conference coaches. Moffitt was also a unanimous selection to the 2021-22 preseason All-GNAC men’s basketball team.

Last season, Moffitt topped the Falcons’ roster with a points per game average of 17.6, 3.2 assists per game and a total of 229 points. He also led the team in free throws and field goals made in the 13 games played during the shortened season.

Overall, the SPU Falcons finished the non-GNAC 2020-21 season with a 10-3 record. They will return to a full NCAA Division II schedule this fall. The team has all five starters returning from the squad that closed out the COVID-19 season. It is not a surprise that the GNAC coaches’ poll unanimously voted the team favorites to repeat their 2019-20 championship.

SPU last played a full basketball season in 2019-20. Then a sophomore, Moffitt is credited with being the key player that turned the Falcons season around. After a 0-4 start, the Falcons went on a 14-game win streak and ended that season with a 22-7 record. As a result, Moffitt was awarded 2020 All-West Region and first-team All-GNAC honors.

Moffitt is building on his high school career where he topped 1,000 points for Spanaway Lake, Washington. He was also voted first team All-Area and first team All-State. In his 2017-18 graduating season, Moffitt averaged 19.0 points per game for the Sentinels.

The 6-foot-2 point guard is majoring in communication studies and if a professional basketball career does not follow his time at SPU, he hopes to run his own business. Right now, he’ll be focusing on performing well during this season ahead of being draft eligible in 2022.

Moffitt has previously been described as playing in slow motion by his coach Grant Leep. He has the capacity to see plays developing ahead of other members of his team, and also ahead of opponents. His favorite players are James Harden (Nets) and Devin Booker (Suns), and Moffitt’s play certainly looks to emulate the style of these shooting guards.

Moffitt was joined in the All-GNAC preseason team by teammates Harry Cavell and Shaw Anderson. SPU is the only team with three players voted onto the All-GNAC preseason team. Cavell, another guard, also matched Moffitt’s unanimous selection.

Moffitt’s competitive season tips off in the SCB National Hall of Fame Classic, being held in St. Joseph, Missouri, on Nov. 6 and 7. SPU will become the first team from the Northwest to compete in the prestigious tournament. Their first game at home is on Nov. 27 against Point Loma Sea Lions. Their GNAC season will open against the Central Washington Wildcats at the Brougham Pavilion on Dec. 2.
