Ty Fryfogle’s 5-year journey as a productive wide receiver for IU football

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Ty Fryfogle, a fifth-year wide receiver for the IU football team, continues to demonstrate his consistency and overall football prowess. But will his unique skill set translate to the NFL?

Fryfogle entered his senior season as a staple of the IU offense for the previous three years, racking up more than 1,700 receiving yards and 13 total touchdowns prior to 2021.

Fryfogle originally arrived at IU in 2017, but it was in 2018 when the wide receiver began making an impact on the field. He was part of a receiving core that included Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, who is now playing in the NFL for the Tennessee Titans.

In 2019, Fryfogle made significant improvements to his game, nearly doubling his receiving totals from the previous year. The Hoosiers went 8-5 in 2019, highlighting IU’s progress under head coach Tom Allen.

In 2020, Fryfogle had his best season with 721 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, establishing himself as the top wide receiver for the Hoosiers. He played an instrumental role on the offense during an incredibly successful season in which IU went 6-2 with a bowl appearance.

Fryfogle’s best game came against the No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes in 2020, catching seven passes for 218 yards and three touchdowns. IU came up just short of upsetting Ohio State, with a final score of 42-35. It would have been the Hoosiers’ first win over the Buckeyes in 32 years.

Heading into the 2021 season, expectations for IU and Fryfogle were high. The senior wide receiver continues to remain productive, although the Hoosiers have lost crucial games against Iowa, Cincinnati and Michigan State.

Fryfogle is the recipient of several impressive accolades during his career at IU, including the Big Ten Richter-Howard Receiver of the Year award and AP All-American third-team honors in 2020. He was also recognized as Indiana’s Outstanding Offensive Player of the Year.

As for Fryfogle’s prospects of going pro, scouts believe that he has a legitimate chance at impressing a NFL team. He stands at 6-foot-2 and weighs 205 pounds – the prototypical size for a big possession receiver.

With a larger frame and stature, Fryfogle has the ability to dominate smaller defensive backs in terms of his catch radius and overall physicality.

Fryfogle has some work to do when it comes to improving certain elements of his game, but scouts will admit that he has the versatility, strength and resilience to make a name for himself in the NFL.
