Rosemount Irish girls soccer dominate the season, head to state
ROSEMOUNT, Minn. — The Rosemount girls soccer team cruised to a Section 3AAA championship and a ticket punched to this year’s state tournament. The No. 3 ranked team in Class 3AAA only lost one game all season.
Rosemount was a force all season and finished with an 18-1 overall record. The only loss of the season came against Lakeville North on Sept. 19. The Irish dropped that game 4-2. Rosemount outscored their opponents 85-5. Not only do they do damage on the offensive end, but also lock it down on the defensive end. Rosemount recorded 17 shutout games of the 19 games played this season.
Whatever momentum the Irish had in the regular-season continued in the section tournament. Rosemount ran through the quarterfinals and semifinals when they outscored Hastings 7-0 and Bloomington Jefferson 3-0 in the second round.
Rosemount went on to play Eagan in the section championship. The Irish snuck away with a 1-0 win for a chance at a state championship. A year later it was the other way around. Eagan defeated Rosemount in the section final by the same score, 1-0. However, there was no state tournament last year because of COVID-19.
Two juniors have led the charge this season. Goalkeeper Jordan Hecht has played in all 19 games for the Irish (no stats available for section championship game). Hecht put up 18 shutouts, made 59 saves and notched a .922 save percentage and a .45 goals allowed per game average.
The other junior, midfielder Taylor Heimerl, tallied a team-high 14 goals and 18 assists. Both players were ninth graders on the team in 2019 when the team took third place at state.
Rosemount’s first-round task will be against the Elk River Elks. The Elks are 11-5-1 and are an unseeded-team heading into the tournament. Elk River outscored their opponents 7-2 in the Section 8AAA tournament. The Irish take on the Elks on Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m.
