The promising program of the Boyle County Rebels and their aspirations of conquering the state of Kentucky
DANVILLE, Ky. — The impressive run of the Boyle County Rebels varsity boys basketball during the comeback season of 2020-2021, after the long break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was an auspicious one and showed great potential for the team out of Danville.
More specifically, the team of coach Dennie Webb was able to secure the record of 22 wins and five losses overall while attaining a 7-1 record in league games. A quick statistical approach would show us that the Boyle County Rebels had a 0.81 winning percentage. They finished first in District 45.
But that wasn’t enough for the Boyle County Rebels varsity boys basketball, who wanted to see the team’s rankings ameliorate and move upwards in the list, from the top-15 at least to the top-10 for the entire state of Kentucky.
When understanding the situation from this approach, it’s pretty apparent to seem strange seeing the team actually competing at such an outstanding level and being at No. 14 overall. Nonetheless, with a brief in-depth analysis of the past seasons and how the club was actually playing before the season of COVID-19, one could make a statement that No. 14 is more than enough.
That’s mainly because, in the season of 2019-2020, the Boyle County Rebels varsity boys basketball team finished with a negative record of 12 wins and 14 losses, while being second in the 45th District with a record of 3-3, only behind the Lincoln County Patriots varsity boys basketball team who finished with a 4-1 record.
The 2018-2019 season’s record was even worse, with a total winning percentage of 0.39, the overall narrative being 10 wins and 16 losses. The league report showed three wins and five losses, which resulted in third place finish in District 45.
In other words, before the 2020-2021 season, the Boyle County Rebels varsity boys basketball had four years to attain a positive record, only in 2016-2017 when they finished at an overall record of 18-15 and a league record of 4-4, which wasn’t enough to get to the top of the district, but second place. This was a slightly better record from the previous season, in 2015-2016, when the Boyle County Rebels finished at a 15-13, with a 0.54 winning percentage but a losing record of 4-5 in the league, getting third place in the district.
But the real question that one has to ask is what do all these analytics mean when it comes to understanding the team’s identity, the history of the Boyle County Rebels varsity boys basketball, and their aspirations for the future?
One thing that has to be stated is that the team never gave up. From a negative record and below-average winning percentage, the Boyle County Rebels varsity boys basketball has attained a nearly 0.90 winning percentage, only one loss in the 45th District of Kentucky, and a spot in the top-15 list of the state.
It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to argue that the Boyle County Rebels varsity boys basketball team has made one of the most dominating comebacks that the state of Kentucky has ever witnessed. Still, one could also make a case of that not being enough for such a persistent group of players and coaching staff.
Time will only tell whether the Boyle County Rebels varsity boys basketball team, the team out of the city of Danville, will be able to send a strong message to the rest of the state come winter that the rest of the Kentucky teams shouldn’t be overlooking the Rebels.
