Where are they now?: ‘Last Chance U’ Marcus Wood Sr.

SCOOBA, Miss. (BVM) — “Last Chance U ” has highlighted so many great players and coaches over the years. One of those coaches that’s been highlighted was Marcus Wood Sr.

Wood first stepped on to the EMCC campus as a strong safety for then head football coach Tom Goode. After playing with the Lions, he continued his college athletic career with Bucknell University. Ultimately ended his playing career with Georgetown College in Kentucky.

Wood would get into coaching after his playing days. He started coaching with Holmes Community College and after that he joined Tom Goode again at EMCC in 1997 as the Lions running back coach.

Following his first coaching stint at EMCC, Wood’s next stop would be at Meridian High School. There he served as an assistant for three years (1998-00). Meridian captured the Region 3-5A state championship in his final year with the team.

After moving on from Meridian, Wood landed at Philadelphia High School. From 2001-02, Wood helped the team to back-to-back state playoff appearances.

Wood moved on to Columbia High School. He’d have another successful tenure there as a coach and helped the football team to three straight Class 3A state playoff appearances (2003-05). Wood would then spend two seasons (2006-07) as the head football coach at Gulfport High School before making his return to Scooba.

For nine seasons (2008-16) Wood operated as the Lions offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach under Buddy Stephens. During that stretch, the EMCC offense flourished. The Lions offense averaged 50+ points a game and compiled an overall record of 87-12 (51-3 division play). The Lions captured three National Junior College Athletic Association national championships, won five Mississippi Association of Community & Junior Colleges state titles, eight division crowns and five NJCAA bowl victories.

Wood would step away from coaching in 2017 and took a role as the Executive Director of College Advancement and Athletics. Along with a new role at EMCC, Wood would also be inducted into the EMCC Sports Hall of Fame.

Now, Wood is ready to get back into coaching. On Oct. 29, Wood agreed to return to Holmes to become the head football coach.

It’s been an incredible journey for Marcus Wood. Now back at Holmes Community College, he’ll look to keep changing the lives of young athletes.
