Plano West tennis wins sixth state title
PLANO, Texas (BVM) — The Plano West Wolves tennis team has done it. After placing second in the last two seasons, the Wolves were able to defeat Lake Travis High school 10-3 in the state final to capture their sixth title.
It is the team’s 17th time in the state tournament since Coach Morgen Walker took over. Ranked No. 1 in Class 6A all year by the Texas Tennis Coaches Association, it was a dream season. Plano West utterly dominated the tournament by outscoring its opponents 73-8.
In their last five matches, the Wolves defeated teams ranked in the top 11, according to the TTCA.
Friday’s state title win also capped off a 17-match winning streak — truly a great way to end the season for Walker, who won his 500th match not too long ago.
“When I look back on my career, I truly believe one of the things I’ll be proud [of], in addition to working with all the kids and helping them become better people, is the fact we’ve been able to maintain this [level of play for so long],” Walker said. “[But} it really is about the kids and the other people that are involved that make this happen. I’m just along for the ride.”
A special moment for the players and coaches, it won’t be something they forget for a long time.
“For them, to win one, [I think will be special],” Walker said. “When they look back on high school and someone asks, ‘What do you remember about high school?’ one of the first things I expect them to say, if they win a state title is, ‘I was a state champion.’”
