Q&A with Chloe Shuck who is a Norfolk Collegiate two-sport athlete

NORFOLK, Va. — Chloe Shuck is a sophomore at Norfolk Collegiate and when she’s not dedicating herself to her studies, she’s on the fields and courts. Chloe ’24, is a two-season athlete who’s honing her skills on the school’s volleyball team in the fall and on the lacrosse team in the spring. She’s also a Merit Scholar, which is a competitive merit-based scholarship program that is eligible for students who demonstrate initiative, integrity and determination.

It’s her love of the sports and the differences within them that keeps Chloe coming back, season after season. While she’s not sure yet if she will pursue a competitive athletic career in college, she does see herself continuing her passion for them through a club or intramural team. Here’s a little bit about Chloe.

What is your biggest challenge in your sport, and what do you do to manage this challenge?
Chloe Shuck: A challenge for me with both sports is that I get too much in my head and it can affect the way I play.

Do you work outside of school or are you involved in other activities?
Shuck: Over the summer, I worked at the Bakehouse at Chelsea. I also participate in a community program called Band Together, where people of all abilities come together to play musical instruments.

What do you like to do outside of your sport?
Shuck: I enjoy going to the beach and spending time with my friends. I also like kiteboarding, wakeboarding and skiing.

What’s the key for you in balancing your academics with your extracurriculars?
Shuck: I actually find that having less time to do things makes me more productive.

How would you describe your personality?
Shuck: I like to think that I am a friendly person, and I enjoy meeting new people.

What is your favorite snack food?
Shuck: One of my favorite snack foods are the mocha flavored KIT KATⓇ Bars.

What is your favorite song or music artist to get you ready for a game?
Shuck: I like to listen to 2000s throwbacks before a game, such as something by Pitbull.

Do you have a pre-game ritual you follow?
Shuck: No, but I try to take deep breaths to make myself less nervous.

How has the past year with COVID regulations and this year changed how you approach your game, if any?
Shuck: I feel like I’ve definitely become more grateful for the opportunity to play, and it makes me work harder as an athlete.

What’s next for you?
Shuck: After this school year, I plan to participate in more summer clinics for each sport to prepare myself for the upcoming seasons.
