Clark Nixon excited to coach inaugural season of girls flag football at Milton HS

MILTON, Ga. — When it comes to football, the only options for girls, cheer or watch. But all that changed in 2018 thanks to the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons and The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation funded girls’ flag football programs at 19 public high schools in Gwinnett County. The next year, five more counties followed giving Georgia 52 high schools with flag football programs. In 2020, The Georgia High School Association officially sanctioned girls flag football.

This year, Coach Clark Nixon is excited to coach the inaugural season of girls’ flag football at Milton High School.

“The reason why our sport is so special is because many of our athletes have always wanted to play football but have never had this kind of opportunity to play,” says Nixon. Girls’ flag football as a sport is growing exponentially on a national level. Many of these athletes now have the chance to earn scholarships and play in college and I’m so excited for that.”

Currently 15 schools in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics offer flag football scholarships to girls.

“These girls are an inspiration to young girls everywhere,” says Nix. “The hard work and talent I’m already seeing from these athletes is unbelievable. I hope to give them a platform through flag to draw crowds like we see on Friday nights at Milton High School.”

For the past decade, Nixon has coached Boys Varsity Tennis at Milton High School in addition to teaching math. He’s looking forward to working with the first group of lady football players as the new varsity head coach.

“Luckily, working with such great groups of kids means that most of them come motivated to win,” says Nixon. “What I try to do is show them every workout, practice, or game, that I am excited and happy to be there, that I l believe in them, and that our teamwork and success mean a lot to me.”

Nixon lives in Hickory Flat with his wife Michelle, kids Christian, 7, Sarah, 5, and labradoodle, Addie. When he’s not coaching football or tennis at Milton, you can find him coaching his own kids in basketball or flag football.
