Mill Creek cheer ready for challenge of 7A Division after becoming GHSA Coed Division champions

HOSCHTON, Ga. — Two, Four, Six, Eight…. This Cheerhawks squad (Mill Creek High School) is really great! Today’s cheerleaders are not the same squads as yesteryear. And they certainly aren’t the stereotype that so negatively circulates. Cheerleaders are athletes in their own right and our local Mill Creek Squad embodies that competitive spirit to a T.

Coached by Katie Fowler and Austin Sorrells, the Mill Creek Competitive Cheerleading Squad has won state for three consecutive years, a feat that has never been accomplished in the Coed Division. This year will bring a new challenge, though, as they move from the Coed Division to the highly competitive 7A Division.

“This is an extremely competitive division, so our goal is to always walk off the mat knowing we did everything we could do,” shares Katie, “We always aim to continue the Mill Creek tradition of excellence.”

The squad has been practicing relentlessly to make necessary improvements and edits to the routine. At the time we went to print they had competed twice, placing 1st and 2nd respectively. November is the home stretch for the season as the squad aims for another appearance and win at the State Championships.

Amusingly, the Mill Creek squad is pretty superstitious. They listen to the same songs and the same athletes carry all of their gear. The pole cannot be split while they walk for fear of bad luck. Says Katie with a laugh, “We are a little crazy about it, actually, but whatever makes them feel prepared to compete, I will go with.”

To hype themselves for competition the Mill Creek Cheerhawks listen to “Never Enough” from The Greatest Showman. The typical pre-competition meal is Starbucks or Chick-fil-a. Katie says they are practically made of frappes and nuggets.

Superstitions and rituals aside, this is an incredibly talented group. “There are athletes on this team who have never gone to State and lost,” Katie reminds me. “They would love nothing more than to achieve a 4-peat in their new division.”

The Mill Creek squad is motivated primarily by their relationships with one another. Cheerleading is the ultimate team sport. If one piece is missing or underperforms, it negates the entire squad’s goals.

Support your local squad by cheering them on. Even cheerleaders need cheerleaders. Go get a ring, ladies!
