The greatness of Keiser Seahawks’ guard Core’von Lott

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Fans come in droves to an arena to witness greatness unfold in front of their eyes. For the unlucky ones who aren’t able to attend, they will make sure to mark their calendars so that they can observe from their homes the momentous occasion that comes along every once in a while. This level of anticipation and excitement is attributed to very few athletes in basketball. But it certainly applies to Keiser Seahawks guard Core’von Lott.

The 6-foot-1 guard has grabbed the attention of everyone in the Florida region with his outstanding shooting. This is largely in part to head coach Marcus “Chief” Bryant’s decision to give Lott the green light to fire the ball whenever it comes his way. This resulted in Lott taking 119 more shots than the second highest field goal attempter. The reason for the trust is because Lott has as gift for scoring.

Lott led the team in the 2020-21 season in minutes played and in scoring. He averaged 18.1 points per game from 34.8 minutes. He took 426 shots and made 202 of them, which resulted in a 47.4 field goal percentage. Those were the most made field goals by a Keiser Seahawk last season. Additionally, over a third of his shots came from beyond the arc where he had a 44.6 three-point percentage. Those are solid numbers. It’s important to note that he’s taken the most free throws on the team, earning an 80.8 free throw percentage. This array of shooting is indicative of how well-rounded he is as a sharpshooter.

However, it would be a misinformed assessment to presume that Lott is just a shooter. He’s second on the team in both assists and steals. Not only does he have a feel of when to shoot, but he realizes that defenders have scouted him as a threat when the ball is in his hands and is more than willing to dish to an open teammate. He’s a threat on the defensive side of the court where he’s averaging 1.1 steals per game.

Such a well-rounded player doesn’t go unnoticed in the league. Lott has earned a third team All-American honors and a first team All-Sun Conference honors. The recognition comes from stellar performances where he registered 20-plus points in 13 games and where he drained four or more three-pointers in 12 contests. He also hit a buzzer-beater shot in the opening round of the NAIA Tournament to send the Keiser Seahawks to the Round of 32.

Lott is a talented athlete who has the confidence from his coaching staff to shoot but also the awareness to know when to pass the ball. His style of play belongs in the pantheon of elite college basketball hall of famers given his efficiency when shooting, his precision when passing and his timing when stealing. Such a well-rounded basketball player is a rarity in the sport which makes him an attraction. People will come to see him play and those who can’t will tune in to watch him.
