Bishop Brossart Mustangs working to stay on top of their division

ALEXANDRIA, Ky. — When Bishop Brossart Mustangs varsity boys soccer faced the Montgomery County Indians on Oct. 14 for a natural playoff game between the two, nobody knew what would result from this long-awaited derby. The Indians got the victory 2-1. Still, the Mustangs stay undefeated in their league and on top of the 39th District’s standings.

The group of players out of the small town of Alexandria in the state of Kentucky have shown persistence and great chemistry. Under the coaching of both R. Schaeffer and Brian Goller, they have acquired a Top-50 spot in the entire state of Kentucky.

After reviewing and analyzing the recent scores of the team, one would make the case that the Mustangs are a more fundamentally defensive-based group of soccer players who don’t care so much about blowing out the opposing team, but more about not letting anyone score on their side of the terrain.

That’s why on average, the team isn’t scoring more than 2.5 goals per game, but at the same time, it’s also rare to see the opposing club achieve more than one goal in the game. Even though the reality is that derbies like the one against Campbell County on Oct. 7, where they won with the score of 1-0, are frequent, they aren’t shy to push the gas pedal with other teams, such as their 5-0 home conference tournament victory against the Calvary Christian Cougars on Oct. 5.

To produce a well-rounded and in-depth analysis, one has to consider the previous years and the comparison of all stats and numbers. Should one have read and analyzed the statistics and the numbers of the previous seasons, it would be made perfectly clear that the Mustangs have made massive progress as a team and as a soccer club in general.

More specifically, their worst season in the last 5 years came in 2019-20, when they had a negative record of five wins, 14 losses, and two draws. This was the year when, with a 1-2 record in the league, they fell back to third place in the 37th District. They even had some humiliating losses at that season, such as the match against the Conner Cougars on Aug. 26, which ended at an 11-0 score against the Mustangs.

They managed to bounce back, but it wasn’t enough for the next season and their aspirations of moving up the “state rankings” ladder. In the 2020-21 season, they had the perfect score of three wins and zero losses in the league, attaining first place in their own District, but they went in an overall record of 10-10 and a .50 winning percentage (they were at .29 the previous season).

One obvious thing is that the number one purpose of competing at such an outstanding level would be the state rankings and a future shot at the title. Therefore, one would have to take that into account when looking at the team’s statistics as a whole.

From the 95th place in the 2019-20 season rankings, the Mustangs managed to show their true identity in the field. They found themselves in 62nd place on the scales the following season. This season, they had a pretty average score with the review of the naked eye, but when it came to the rankings of the state and the progress they had made the last two years, the group of players were ranked in the Top-50 list at 43rd place.

But is this their sole goal? Is a team that has completed such a comeback ready to be satisfied with less than what they deserve? If you ask me, I’d say no. The 2018-19 season, when they had the perfect league score of 5-0, the first place in the district and a record of 12-5-3, is what they are chasing.

At the state level, the Bishop Brossart Mustangs were ranked 23rd during that season.

Will the Mustangs do it again? Will the team out of Alexandria manage to get a place along with Kentucky’s most powerful soccer clubs? They have the skills, the team chemistry, the identity and the experience. I’d advise you to stay alert to see what the Bishop Brossart Mustangs do next.
