Kyle Hamilton: Notre Dame safety and potential NFL superstar
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Who is Kyle Hamilton? He is the starting safety for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team, and many believe that he has incredible star potential in the NFL.
Hamilton originally arrived in South Bend, Indiana back in 2019 and immediately began turning heads with three interceptions in his very first practice. He earned All-American honors his freshman year at Notre Dame, and the legend of Hamilton only grew from there.
At 6-foot-4 and weighing 220 pounds, Hamilton is uncharacteristically tall and bulky for his position. However, despite his size, the junior safety has incredible speed, strength, and overall physicality.
Many NFL scouts and coaches already know that Hamilton is a freak athlete in terms of his measurables. At just 18 years old, he had a 42-inch vertical and a 10-yard split of 1.66 seconds. Physically speaking, Hamilton was already light years ahead of other college football players at his position.
As recently as October, ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr. named Kyle Hamilton his No. 2 overall NFL prospect in college football, only behind Oregon defensive end, Kayvon Thibodeaux.
Kiper Jr. notes that Hamilton is one of the most versatile defensive players in the country with unbelievable range and coverage skills.
NFL draft expert Todd McShay also believes that Hamilton is a top-5 prospect, saying that the junior Notre Dame safety “is a matchup nightmare for offenses.” McShay also boasts about Hamilton’s size, physical tools, explosiveness, and incredible consistency.
At this point in the 2021 season, while sidelined for multiple games due to a nagging knee injury, Hamilton continues to impress the football world on a national stage.
In the seven games he played thus far in 2021, Hamilton has already racked up three interceptions, four pass deflections, and 34 total tackles. It goes without saying that when Hamilton is on the field, he’s extremely productive and efficient.
Hamilton also has a knack for producing highlight-reel plays, including an interception against Florida State in which the junior safety traveled nearly the entire width of the field to pull off.
As Kyle Hamilton continues to ascend on everyone’s draft boards, there still remains one question: which team will he play for in the NFL? While the answer is not immediately apparent, no one can deny the fact that a team will select Hamilton in the first round.
