After 26 years, Normal West girls volleyball is heading back to state

NORMAL, Ill. — The Normal West Volleyball program began in 1995 under coach Ellie Duax, who took the team to state in the inaugural season, but have not been able to find their way back…until now.

Under the leadership of current Coach Kelsey Mueller, and Senior Big Ten recruit Averie Hernandez, the Wildcats are heading back to the State Tournament after a 26 year hiatus.

It wasn’t easy getting past the Taylorville Tornadoes and their “Purple Rain” student section, but the Wildcats kept their composure to come from being behind 14-20 in the first set to win 26-24 and then took set two, 25-21, in the Super-Sectionals.

Normal West (33-6) faces Belvidere North in the state tournament semifinals on Friday at approximately 5:30 p.m. at Redbird Arena in Normal.
