Minutemen boys soccer upset South Plainfield in the first round of playoffs

MENDHAM, N.J. — The Mendham Minutemen boys soccer team upset fourth seed South Plainfield in the first round of playoffs. The Minutemen were the 13th seed going into the first round of the playoffs.

On the road, the Minutemen were led by sophomore Griffin Coutts, junior George Kaparis and senior Tyler Cilio. Coutts scored the only goal in the second half which ultimately won the Minutemen the game, 2-1. Cilio had a goal in the first half which was assisted by junior Collyer McLaud.

The goalkeeper for Mendham, Kaparis, was remarkable. He made 11 saves to help secure the victory.

In the last three games, Mendham has caught fire and two of the three games were shutouts. They have advanced in the North Jersey Section 2 Group 3 state playoffs where they will face off with the fifth seed, the Chatham Cougars, in the quarterfinal round later in the week.

Although the Tigers were eliminated, they had some highlights from the hard-fought game. Junior Bryan Bonilla scored in the first half off an assist from freshman Carlos Bedoya. This loss concludes South Plainfield’s season, finalizing their record at 11-6-1.
