Blair Oaks softball come out on top after winning state championship

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — High school softball team Blair Oaks was all smiles recently after they bagged the title for the Class 3 level state championship, all thanks to a walk-off walk.

Finishing the season with a 32-4 record following the state title win against Chillicothe, the victory gave the team’s head coach, Sharon Buschjost, a school record number of career wins, with 517.

This is the second time in the program’s history that the Lady Falcons have won a state championship.

After the game, Buschjost discussed how hard her players worked to see magic unfold before their eyes. She always wished her team would get the chance to relish their win by celebrating. Therefore, that’s exactly what they managed to do again.

The lead took place during the game’s seventh inning, securing a solid win in the Missouri State High School Activities Association title match. This victory gives the renowned softball team their first state championship since they won over 10 years ago in 2009.

“Is there something about this particular team that makes me confident that we can win it this year? Absolutely!” mentioned Coach Buschjost who always made sure her girls had their eyes on the target.

Blair Oaks opened up a winning chance by scoring during the third inning as Kally Bruce came through with a double, while Kenzie Libbert securing a single allowed them to take a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Falcons hoped to go beyond the Final Four and they managed to reach their goal with hard work.

With the team’s 2-1 lead that headed toward the seventh, Chillicothe ended up tying the game with their RBI single during the inning’s top half. Soon, Macee Ernst from Blair Oaks pulled through with her successful bases-loaded walk.

Meanwhile, Andi Siebeneck gave the Falcons a tough time after pitching an entire game, giving up a total of two runs across eight hits, but also managing to strike out nine. This included the vital strikeout in the leading sixth, leaving two baserunners from the Hornets stranded.

Coach Buschjost mentioned the state victory was completely unique and meaningful to her not only because of the state title, but because who was on the team when they won.

“It’s always special, because each year a new team is made with new kids,” she said.
