Boone County Rebels working for a top-50 spot in Kentucky

FLORENCE, Ky. — When the girls out of Florence finished with an overall record of 11-15 during 2019-20 season, nearly everybody lost hope in their dreams of being a top team in the entire state of Kentucky.

The comeback is occurring right in front of everyone’s eyes. The girls, with an impressive recovery during the winter of 2020-21, have shown that they have the capacity of making the upset and proving everyone wrong.

The team is ready to begin the new season. Under the coaching of Jessica Wendeln and Ryan Bowman, they have been preparing for such circumstances and cases where they would need to rise to the occasion and show the state what they are made of as a team.

The expectations are getting higher and higher since the Rebels out of Boone County recovered from the pandemic and the imperfect records of last year and showed everyone that there’s some light at the end of the tunnel.

The record for the 2020-21 Rebels was at a 14-10, with a .58 winning percentage and a league record of 1-2. They finished 4th in the 33rd district and suffered a loss and an early playoff exit against the Ryle Raiders, who won their matchup on Mar. 16 with a final score of 57-41.

Many arguments can take place in terms of the team’s record for the 2020-21 season. Nobody can say that the girls haven’t shown work ethic, passion and dedication to their goal. The road to the top spot of the state might be a long one. However, compared to the previous years, the girls out of Florence indicate that they are on the right track of the steady process.

The girls have been working hard throughout the summer. They have been working on both their skills and on building stronger ties and developing their team chemistry through collaboration for community services and volunteering.

Should one wish to actually try and understand Rebels’ progress, it should be mandatory to consider their previous records and other years in which they’ve come a long way from being a team that was by no means considered a threat.

A prime example is the overall record of the 2019-20 season. The Rebels finished with an 11-15 record (.42 winning percentage) but had one win and six losses in their respective league, where they finished in the 4th place. The team didn’t even make it to the playoffs this particular year.

The previous season was way worse than the record mentioned above. The overall record during the winter of 2018-19 was 6-1 for the Rebels, who finished in a 2-3 league score and got 3rd place in the 33rd district. The .30 winning percentage gave them No. 75 in the state rankings.

The winter of 2017-18 was even worse for the Rebels. They finished at a 4-14 overall record of .22 winning percentage, 0-6 league record and the last place in the 33rd district. Once again, this didn’t differentiate from their previous season record, when they finished at a 10-20 score of .33 winning percentage, a league record of 0-7 and the last place in the district once again.

The pattern of the Boone County Rebels is pretty apparent. From the standpoint of their current year, they are a mediocre team, and it’s no big deal that they are actually battling for a top-50 spot in the state of Kentucky.

In retrospect, the girls out of Florence went from having a below .25 winning percentage an entire season to being close to achieving 60% throughout a season which will push them towards facing more and more challenging teams the following years.

Do the Rebels have what it takes or was this just a lucky year?
