Freshman Ty Thompson electrifies Graham Steers football
GRAHAM, Texas — The 2021 Graham Steers varsity football team experienced strong results in the regular season, with the team going 6-3 and qualifying for the UIL Texas football state championships. One critical part of the team’s success came from freshman Ty Thompson, the team’s quarterback and occasional free safety.
Thompson is only a freshman, but he is expected to be an outstanding talent for the Steers for the next few years. He is an active passer who is also one of the top running threats for the club.
Thompson was the most active quarterback for the Steers during the regular season. He went 94-174 with 1,135 passing yards. He also had eight touchdowns and six interceptions. Thompson has nearly 900 more passing yards than the team’s other listed quarterback, senior Ashton Day.
Most of Thompson’s receiver corps this year included seniors, with Tre Alvarez leading the club with 588 yards and six touchdowns. Day was also a receiver who caught a few passes from Thompson, totaling eight passes for 80 yards.
Another exciting part of Thompson comes from how active he is on the ground. Thompson had 285 rushing yards for the Steers during the season, plus he scored two touchdowns. He was the second-most active running back on the roster behind junior Noah Jilek, who ran for 902 yards and six touchdowns.
Thompson’s hard work and leadership have been critical in helping the Steers recover from a tough start to the 2021 season. The team lost three games in a row after winning their first match of the season by one point. The team would go forward and win five games in a row after struggling at the start. The team had two shutouts, while they also had a 43-9 victory over Vernon on Oct. 22.
The team’s performance is good enough to help lead them into the state football championships. The Steers will compete against Sanger in their first match on Nov. 11. The team has hopes to go further in the UIL championships and become one of the state’s top football programs.
The powerful work of the Graham Steers has been noticeable throughout the season, as the team has been resilient and ready to compete. The work of freshman quarterback Thompson proved to be impressive, and he will potentially become a more powerful figure for the team as his high school football career goes forward.
