Hamilton Hornets, helping the community in hard times of winter

HAMILTON, Ontario — The Hamilton Hornets are a rugby team with 67 years of history, it is one of the oldest sports organizations in the city and they not only stand out for what they do on the pitch but also for the social actions they carry out throughout the year. That is why the community especially appreciates the club.

The 2021 season ended in September, when the Hamilton Hornets Senior Men’s team lost the Rhys-Jones Cup against the Stoney Creek Camels Rugby Club. It was not the result they expected, but the truth is that they had a good performance throughout the year—returning to the field after a difficult 2020 made all the effort worthwhile. After the season, the organization started with the social part to help the community in difficult times.

From the end of October and during November, the Hamilton Hornets will be making a collection called “Winter Coat Drive,” an action that seeks to collect winter jackets in good condition to donate them to Good Shepherd Hamilton, a center that helps people in need from the Greater Hamilton and Toronto areas in Ontario.

The intense cold is approaching Hamilton, the Hornets are aware of it, and during the “Winter Coat Drive,” they have made their clubhouse available so that donors can leave the jackets that will be sent. Good Shepherd Hamilton is an organization that, “aspires to provide programs and services and an employment environment that promotes equity, inclusion and social justice.”

The “Winter Coat Drive” means so much for the Hornets, who recently created The Hamilton Hornets Rugby Fund in partnership with The Canadian Rugby Foundation, an influential organization supporting players and teams.

“This will provide us with the ability to utilize funds for capital projects as well as an endowment fund to assist with scholarships, hardship programs, youth, coach and referee development and high-performance player assistance,” the club said.

In 2022, the Hamilton Hornets will return with renewed illusions in all categories. While that happens, they continue in search of new members for the club and players Under 8, Under 10 Non-Contact, Under 12 Co-Ed Contact, Under 14, Under 16, Under 18 Junior Boy, Under 18 Junior Girls, Senior Men 18-plus, Senior Women 18-plus, Silverbacks and Senior Old Boys – 35-plus, all of them can apply on the Hornets website or on social media.

At the same time, social causes will continue to help those who need it most. It’s important to say that the Hornets have also generated funds for the Juravinski Cancer Centre, founded in 1992, representing pride for the city for its help to people.

The Hornets teach us every day that not only is it enough to try to be the best at rugby, but one can also be successful by helping those who need it most. In Hamilton, citizens can take pride in having a team that cares about their community.
