New Creekview football coach Tony Castillo is making an impact
CARROLLTON, Texas — Creekview High School’s varsity football team hasn’t had much to cheer about in the past few years, as the Mustangs haven’t had a winning record since 2015. The program ran into a significant rough patch, with the Mustangs going 0-10 in 2017 and 1-8 in 2020. But things have changed in 2021, as first-year coach Tony Castillo has led the Mustangs to a winning record and a playoff berth.
Castillo had a rough start to his coaching days with the Mustangs, as he struggled to get in touch with many of his players and assistants. While virtual meetings have been convenient and necessary for many people, it was tough to physically review the players and get the hang of how the team could compete on the field.
The team installed a new offense and defense plan back in August. There was uncertainty over how the team could adapt to Castillo’s new program, but it has paid off. The Mustangs are more efficient this year than they have been in the past few seasons.
The Mustangs had a 5-4 record, which was enough to help them reach the playoffs for the first time since 2015. The Mustangs will take on the 9-1 Rider Raiders in the first round of the UIL Texas football state championships. The Raiders are the top-rated team in the Wichita Falls area and are expected to be dominant, but that hasn’t stopped Creekview from planning for the game and looking for a potential upset on Nov. 12.
Castillo’s team struggled at the start of the season, as they lost three games in a row after winning their first one. But the team would turn things around on Oct. 2 with a 21-20 victory over Southwest. They followed that game up on Oct. 8 with a 43-0 victory over South Hills.
The Mustangs lost to Wyatt on Oct. 15 by a score of 79-73. The Chaparrals had some high-scoring games throughout the season, but the Mustangs were able to hang tight and compete with them to the end.
The Mustangs finished the season with victories over Poly and North Side. The team finished with a 5-4 record, although that record could be inflated to 6-4 if a Nov. 5 victory by forfeit over Trimble Tech is included.
Castillo’s performance in his first year as Creekview’s varsity football coach has proven to be very successful. The Mustangs even scored more points than they gave up, as they scored 323 points while surrendering 283 to their opponents.
