Simon Fraser University’s Jasdeep Singh named to GNAC preseason All-Conference team
VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Jasdeep Singh plays for a unique basketball program at Simon Fraser University (SFU). SFU has that honor of having the only Canadian athletics program in the NCAA. They originally played in the NAIA, and then Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), but became the first Canadian university athletics program to play in the NCAA in 2011 when they made the move to Division II.
Singh is in the difficult position of being one of the best players on the SFU basketball team. His impact on his team was recognized when he was named to the 2021-22 Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) preseason All-Conference team.
Singh grew up in the Vancouver suburb of Delta, British Columbia. He played high school basketball at Delta Secondary High School and played well enough to secure a spot on the Northwest University basketball team in nearby Kirkland, Washington. Northwest University athletics competes at the NAIA level. The 6-foot-8 forward played well at Northwest University. He started 25 games as a freshman averaging 22.6 minutes a game where he scored 8.3 points per game with 4.5 rebounds. He also shot the ball well, making 41.2% of his shots behind the 3-point line.
Even though Singh was excelling on the basketball court at Northwest University, it was not for him. He decided to transfer to SFU because of their strong academics and to be closer to home. It seems like he made the right move. Singh improved his scoring to 11.4 points a game in his first season at SFU. He also averaged 4.8 rebounds a game.
Singh only got better in his junior season. In a COVID-19 shortened season, Singh averaged 16.4 points and 5.6 rebounds a game. He had a few dominating games against Douglas College, Central Washington University and Southeastern Oklahoma State University. He was a man on a mission against Southeastern Oklahoma. It was a close battle that went to overtime. Singh played 44 minutes and ended with 32 points (18 of which came from 3-pointers) and six rebounds. He led his team to an 86-83 win.
SFU did not play last season but will be playing this season. The team was predicted to finish seventh in the conference, so it will be an uphill battle this year. However, Singh is expected to have another strong season and hoping to lead his team to the NCAA DII Men’s Basketball Tournament.
