The game started off shaky for Oak Ridge. Pleasant Grove won the first match, then the next. Its team had strong hits and saves which demanded a lot of effort for Oak Ridge to maintain the lead. However, the girls never allowed it to get to their heads. They stayed determined to win, and focused on their goal of making it to the championship. Each point Pleasant Grove earned was another reason for the Trojans to fight harder. And each point Oak Ridge gained was an addition to the players’ confidence. During one match, Oak Ridge was down by several points, but they weren’t about to give up. Soon, they had the lead again and won the match. The Eagles would give a difficult serve, and Oak Ridge players would dive, jump and run to keep the ball in play. The score bounced back and forth. After every set came a spike, and after every point came a cheer from the crowd. The dedication of the players reminded the fans of why they were there.

Not only did the strong competition keep the players motivated, but so did their fellow athletes. Before the game, some exchanged high fives while others shared handshakes. They patted each other on the back when walking, and hugged after tough plays. They worked hard to pass the volleyball to each other, and utilize each player’s skills. If someone missed the ball or failed to get it over the net, instead of being frustrated, they exchanged high fives and continued to work together on the next play. The girls out on the court that day were more than teammates, they were family.

Students showed their spirit by coming together and creating a positive atmosphere for the team. The stands were filled with encouragement coming from every chant: “This is our house!” The crowd was proud of the Girls Varsity Volleyball team that represents Oak Ridge High School. Who wouldn’t be? The team is first in the league on a three-game winning streak, which brings them to the championship against Cosumnes Oaks on November 4th. (Note -They went on to win the D1 Championship against Cosumnes Oaks on November 6.)

Oak Ridge Girls Varsity Volleyball team is a talented group of young players. Each one has a place on the team, whether it is the only freshman, Avery Towne, or the libero, Natalie Colfescu. The girls show their sportsmanship, skills, and incredible work ethic during every game. All the hours spent practicing prove their commitment to be the best team they can be. They are a true representation of what it means to be a Trojan.
