Healdsburg Greyhounds basketball has a long history

HEALDSBURG, Calif. — The Healdsburg Greyhounds, that is the general name used to refer to the sports and athletic teams at Healdsburg high school. The focus of this piece, however, is the varsity male basketball team in Healdsburg High school. They use the greyhound as their mascot to signify their strong athletic legacy. The Healdsburg Greyhounds basketball team have been around for almost forever, they were founded in 1880 at the inception of the High school. Their colors are black and cardinal red.

The team has seen a lot of brilliant people come and go, players and coaches alike. In the most recent times, one of the former coaches, Nick Galvan, handed over to Yasha Mokaram in April 2016. Mokaram was a Social Sciences teacher at HHS and had previously served as an Assistant coach on the junior varsity and varsity basketball teams (2010-2012) at HHS. Dr Lori Rhodes who was principal then said in a press release We are very pleased to have a basketball coach already so connected to our school, and are confident that Mr Mokaram will instil strong character in his students/athletes.

After 5 years of fruitful service on the court, in Aug. 2021, Mokaram announced that he was stepping down from the position of Varsity coach. His parting remarks were,

The highlights I have from my years coaching here all involve the players that made this program so special. I’m proud that my players gave everything they had to this program. While a part of me is heartbroken, I’m also embracing being able to be there for my family. This was not the case over the past five years while I was coaching basketball at HHS.The former assistant basketball coach, Kevin Leffew, has been named the new head varsity coach.

The players are not left out of the team’s glory. One of the recent graduates, Dylan Hayman was the Healdsburg leading scorer and went ahead to shatter the school’s 35-year-old record of 1610 points established in 1968 by Mark Giorgi, by finishing the season with a whopping 1,838 points to his name. The current players on the team include Gavin Vogensen (who played a significant role in their victories last season), Otis Harden, Konrad Kluse, Max Hubbell, Pedro Diaz, etc.

The Greyhounds had a fantastic run last season thanks to the diligent efforts of Hayman, Chase Sommer and Vogensen under the guidance of Coach Mokaram. We can expect even greater things from them this season.
