Molly Stratton chips away Colorado high school competition

CENTENNIAL, Colo. — Molly Stratton, a junior at Arapahoe High School is set to have a prime spring golf season. After years of following and learning from her dad around the course, she has shown her work ethic and drive to be able to compete in the Colorado State Tournament.

At the age of 12, Stratton began taking lessons and working on her own game. She found her passion at a young age. Fun rounds of golf on the weekend quickly turned into weeks and weeks of lessons and preparation.

“One moment that I will never forget is when I made my first birdie. I had been playing golf for a little over a year, and I went to play a round of golf with my dad and his friends,” said Stratton. “On hole 18, I had a long putt for a birdie. When the ball fell in the hole, I remember jumping up in down in excitement. My dad said, “the first of many I’m sure” and he was exactly right. That birdie really pushed me to keep practicing and improving.”

Molly Stratton’s work ethic is second to none. While continuing to be a great student at Arapahoe High School, she also loves the competitive nature that high school golf brings.

“Playing competitively is much harder than a fun round on the weekend. The score does not matter and I do not take as much time on my shots,” said Stratton. “When playing in a tournament I have to focus more on my shots. Playing against other good girls adds more competition and motivates me to keep pushing, even after a bad shot. When playing competitively I try not to think about my score or place on the leaderboard. I just focus on the current shot and how to limit my shots.”

The attitude and mindset that Molly Stratton carries with her, leaves no doubt that she will be able to obtain her future goals on the course. With only two years left of high school eligibility, Stratton will be attempting to play at the collegiate level.

“One of my biggest goals is to play Division I golf in college. Another goal is to place top 10 in the state championships this spring,” said Stratton.

The preparation and focus that Stratton brings to the game is next level. Finding other high school athletes like her is rare. She has her eye on the big prize, a State Championship. With all of the work that she has put into her game, don’t be surprised if she is in contention in every major tournament next season.
