The Bronxville Broncos girls soccer team are state champions

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. — Even though sports writers and analysts were used to covering the successes and the achievements of the Bronxville Broncos boys teams, mainly in football, soccer and basketball, the girls are making their presence known by winning the state championship title for the 2021-22 season.

After the long break of two years, the girls out of Bronxville came into the season stronger than ever and ready to compete for the state title. Adversity built the chemistry and the identity of the group of soccer players coached by head coach Don Cupertino and the assistant coaches of Caitlin Hoffer and Michaela Donohue.

The girls earned a spot in the final eight of the New York Class B bracket for the 2021 NYSPHSAA Girls Soccer Championships. In the subregional tournament games, the girls came out of their district without competition.

In the regional playoff games, the first opponent they faced was the Chenango Valley Warriors, a team out of Binghamton that held a perfect and undefeated record until their matchup with the Broncos on Nov. 5. The Broncos dominated the game, and with a decisive score of 3-0, they advanced to the state semifinals.

In the final four, the Broncos had to face a team considered the underdog of the tournament, the Saranac Chiefs. They were ranked at No. 7 for the tournament. Prior to their matchup with the Broncos, the Chiefs had completed the upset against the Skaneateles Lakers, a team ranked at No. 3. The former prevailed in their matchup with a score of 2-4.

However, they weren’t even close to performing the same upset against the Broncos. The girls under Coach Cupertino dominated the Chiefs with a final score of 3-0.

“I hope that they play well, have fun, have a good time and whatever happens happens,” Coach Cupertino said prior to the game. “They have already accomplished a lot, and I am pleased with the season that they had so far.”

But the job wasn’t finished. They had one game left, and the Broncos delivered. It was already evident that the matchup against the Lewiston-Porter Lancers would be far from an easy title game. The young team out of Youngstown had a .91 winning percentage coming in the game, with 17 wins and only one loss.

The Broncos were ready to take on the challenge, however, and they did with enormous success. They won the state title game on Nov. 14 with a score of 2-0, and they were awarded the title of the NYSPHSAA Class B girls soccer state champions.

“The season was very long, but we are in the state finals, and everyone is very happy,” Coach Cupertino stated after the end of the game.

The principal of the school, Ann Meyer, share her excitement on Twitter.

The official account of the Bronxville Broncos girls soccer varsity team tweeted their success as well.

It’s official, the Bronxville Broncos are back on top of the state rankings, and one thing’s for sure. They won’t stop here. After rebuilding the whole team and recovering from the two seasons of a global pandemic and a halt to all tournaments, the Bronxville girls are back and they are ready to compete with teams at a national level.
