Marquavious Brown commits to Georgia basketball for 2023

COVINGTON, Ga. — One of Georgia’s top junior basketball players has announced where he will be playing college basketball starting in 2023. Newton’s Marquavious Brown will be playing for coach Tom Crean and the Bulldogs.

Brown is a 6-foot-4 shooting guard who was highly sought after by many prominent college basketball programs. Georgia was in his final four alongside Texas Tech, UAB and Missouri. Some of the other schools that reportedly wanted to bring him in include Washington State, Virginia Commonwealth, George Washington and Xavier.

Brown had been heavily leaning towards committing to Georgia. He was in Athens recently, as he attended the Bulldogs’ football game against Missouri. Coach Crean also prepared a formal proposal to have Brown commit to play with the Bulldogs.

Rivals.com spoke with Brown about his decision to commit to Georgia. Brown is listed as the 89th-ranked prospect for 2023 in the website’s Top 150 listing.

“(The Bulldogs will) push me to be the best player I can,” Brown told Rivals.com. He also talked about how Athens will be close to him.

“It’s the best spot for mom because she’ll be closer and can be there with me through my process,” he said.

Brown is looking forward to the academic challenge that comes with attending the University of Georgia. He feels that the school is the perfect fit for him, and he is looking forward to getting in touch with Coach Crean and his future teammates.

Brown is Georgia’s first commit for the 2023 recruiting class. His commitment to the Bulldogs comes on the second day of the early signing period for the 2022 class. The move is a sign of Brown’s strong interest in the Bulldogs and where the program is moving.

Rivals.com reports that Brown has been a strong competitor with Newton High School in Covington, Georgia, in the past few years. He does well in attacking the basket and has some smooth passes. He also does well with screens and blocking. Brown has been practicing his three-point shots in recent time, what with the three-point shot being more essential to today’s game.

Rivals.com also says that Brown will remind Bulldog fans of former Bulldog star Travis Leslie. Brown’s dunking ability is similar to what Leslie sported when he competed in Athens.

Brown’s arrival comes as Coach Crean has been working his hardest in getting the Bulldogs back to basketball success. The 2021-22 season marks Crean’s fourth year with the team. The Bulldogs went 14-12 last year, but the team hasn’t reached the NCAA tournament since 2015. The team also hasn’t been a single-digit seed in the NACC tournament since 2002.
