Mendham varsity hoops looks to Noah Pit as season creeps closer

MENDHAM, N.J. — The 2020-21 year made it three consecutive winning seasons for the Mendham Minutemen varsity basketball squad. The boys made it to their third playoff game before dropping a tough one to the Randolph Patriots, officially ending their run at 8-5. The Minutemen’s season lasted as long as it did thanks to a great team effort but at the head of it were upperclassmen Sean Bierals and Noah Pit, leading the way in scoring. With Bierals now graduated from West Morris Mendham High, the Minutemen will have to look towards Pit to repeat his efforts in the upcoming 2021-22 season.

Pit, listed as a varsity member since 2019, had himself a breakout campaign last season as a junior. The lofty scorer appeared in a dozen games for the Minutemen, averaging close to 14 points and almost six rebounds while knocking down a total of 14 three-pointers and 23 free throws. He was first on the team in rebounds by a great margin, and second in points, three pointers and free throws, behind Bierals in each of those categories.

One of Pit’s greater individual feats last winter included his stellar 25-point effort in a blowout victory against Chatham back in early February. In the contest versus the Cougars, Pit canned a season-best four three-pointers and eight rebounds. As the season progressed, he only seemed to improve as he racked up two double doubles to finish out the month of February, one coming in a win over Randolph in a league bout. In that playoff loss versus the Patriots a week later, the Minutemen wing produced a solid all-around line to cap off his season, going for nine points, five rebounds and tying a season-high for three assists.

With the season Pit had, none of it went uncredited. Along with his former teammate Bierals, he was named to the Coaches’ All-Morris County team for his triumphs as a junior. Many may not know that Pit was great enough to place 23rd of 78 athletes in a recent NJ Advance Media poll for the top boys basketball juniors in the state. The poll consisted of over 3,000 votes. Pit earned 140 of them.

As the Minutemen will certainly feel the absence of the several seniors they lost, Bierals especially, Pit and his resume have most definitely proved he is more than ready for the task in 2021-22. The season begins in December. After a few scrimmages, Pit and the Mendham Minutemen are scheduled to open up against rivals West Morris Central in a Dec. 17 home game.
