Watkinsville’s Jake Johnson looking forward to playing at LSU
WATKINSVILLE, Ga. — Watkinsville’s Jake Johnson knows what he will be doing during the 2022 college football season. He’ll be playing as a new recruit for the LSU Tigers.
Jake has been rated as one of the top tight ends in the recruiting Class of 2022. A member of the Oconee County High School football team, Jake was one of the top players for the Warriors in 2021. He had 697 receiving yards and eight touchdowns during his senior year.
Jake Johnson is the younger brother of Max Johnson, the starting quarterback for LSU. The two are the sons of Brad Johnson, a former NFL quarterback who won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2003.
Jake recently went to the LSU campus in Baton Rouge to work out with some of the other new recruits who will be playing for the Tigers in the future. Part of his workout was with Walker Howard, another recruit who will be playing quarterback for the Tigers soon. Walker and Jake are both looking forward to being strong threats for the Tigers in the near future.
“I’m building a great relationship with the players that are on the team right now,” Jake told Sports Illustrated. “They’re all good guys and are going to be good teammates.”
Jake’s choice to head to LSU was an easy one, although he was subject to many offers from other high-level college programs. Among the schools that offered him scholarships included Alabama, Florida, Michigan, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Jake’s goal for the upcoming season is to build up mass and get his frame to fit more of a tight end’s build. Jake is 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds, which is light for a tight end.
“(I’m) just trying to get in good shape before summer workouts get going,” Jake said. “I’m fully all the way at LSU. I’ll probably be down there to see Max again this summer.”
But there is one question surrounding Jake’s future, and that entails who will be the coach of the Tigers in 2022 and beyond. Ed Orgeron is leaving after the 2021 season, so Jake and the other new recruits in Baton Rouge will be led by a new coach. There are many potential coaching candidates all around, including Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher, Baylor’s Dave Aranda and Louisiana-Lafayette’s Billy Napier.
