Carlsbad’s Cameron Thomas cannot be stopped on the gridiron

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – I do not think Cameron Thomas anticipated having such a solid junior season for the San Diego State University (SDSU) Aztecs football team. He has been a big reason for the Aztecs’ defensive success this season. The Aztecs are ranked No. 22 in the nation through their first 11 games. They are 10-1, with their one loss coming against Fresno State a few weeks ago. But that’s enough about the Aztecs; let’s talk about Thomas.

Thomas grew up in Carlsbad, California, and played football with his older brother Zachary (Zachary is a starting offensive lineman in his final season at SDSU). He attended Carlsbad High School and played on the football team for three seasons on the defensive line and as a tight end. His impact on offense was much more limited than on defense. He had 22 receptions for 294 yards and four touchdowns in three seasons. On defense, he had 88 tackles, five tackles for loss (TFLs), 9.5 sacks, a pass deflection and a fumble recovery in his final two seasons.

Thomas was a three-star recruit out of high school and received scholarship offers from Oregon State, Wyoming, Navy and SDSU. He decided to join his older brother at SDSU.

Thomas was redshirted for his freshman season. He played in three games, including a bowl game, so he would not use a year of his NCAA eligibility. He played in all 13 games in his redshirt freshman season. He made a large impact that season with his 49 tackles and 5.5 sacks. He was named an All-Mountain West first team selection and to the second team Freshman All-America team.

Thomas had high expectations going into his redshirt sophomore season. ESPN name him “one of SDSU’s best five returning players.” He played in eight games and his presence was noticeable in those eight. He finished with 35 tackles and four sacks. SDSU played against Colorado mid-way through the season and Thomas could not be stopped. He had 14 tackles, a sack and three TFLs. He was named an All-Mountain West first team selection for the second time.

Thomas is having another great season for SDSU right now. Through 11 games, he has 60 tackles, 18 TFLs, nine sacks and one forced fumble. He is having his strongest season so far and is a significant part of SDSU’s success.

I expect Thomas to return for his senior season. If everything goes according to plan, we might see him sacking opposing quarterbacks in a couple of years.
