Nick Trombetta: Building on Thornton’s ‘Trojan spirit’

THORNTON, Colo. — One person has continued to help student-athletes of Thornton High School take responsibility, honor each other and strive for success. His name is Nick Trombetta.

Although Trombetta only joined the school in December of 2017, he has in many ways helped the school achieve its target goal, mainly through sports. He was appointed head coach of the Thornton Trojans football team almost four years ago and has continued making a difference in the lives of the students, particularly the football team.

For him, coaching is about giving students the things he never had while playing high school football.

“I kinda had some negative experiences playing high school ball,” Trombetta said. “(I) really wanted to make a difference in that aspect because I understand, for a lot of kids, this is it for them. You don’t want to have the last time you coached or the last time you played to have been soured by a negative interaction.”

Trombetta graduated from Thornton High School, where he played for the Trojan football team. In 2019, he went to Grand Canyon University, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in sociology.

Trombetta started his coaching career with the Thornton Trojans as an assistant coach in 2012. He left the Trojans after three years and joined Denver North in 2016 as an assistant coach. He went on to become their head coach the following year but left when he was appointed as the head coach of the Thornton Trojans in December 2017. He officially took over the head coach role in 2018.

Within a short period, Trombetta made the Trojans one of the finest football teams in Colorado. He won the I-25 Bowl trophy for the Trojans for the first time since it was created in a 27-20 victory against Northglenn in the 2019 season. Northglenn is one of their biggest rivals. The Trojans have not beat them in 14 years, so winning the I-25 Bowl against them was a big deal for Trojan fans. Following that victory, Trombetta’s overall record improved to 41-18.

That same year, he got a double award. He was named the Broncos High School Coach of the Week and the Denver Broncos High School Football Coach of the Week. He was also nominated for the Colorado High School Activities Association Award.

“Thank you to everyone who reached out about the Broncos/CHSAA nomination,” Trombetta said after his nomination for the awards. “It is humbling to hear from everyone. The real credit goes to the players for their efforts and the assistant coaches that made me look the part. They are the ones that make this thing go.”

Coach Trombetta said he wants to build on the Thornton Trojans’ “Trojan Spirit.” Whatever that is, it is yielding incredible results already.
