Reggie Virgil: A three-sport star with one huge passion
MOUNT DORA, Fla. — Whether he’s pulling down rebounds on the basketball court, scoring touchdowns on the football field or dominating at track and field, Reginald “Reggie” Virgil is a force to be reckoned with. He’s a three-sport star at Mount Dora Christian Academy (MDCA) with big things in his future.
In track and field, Virgil competes in the 100-meter run, 400-meter run, 110-meter hurdles, high jump, long jump and triple jump. No matter which competition he’s participating in, Virgil is always a threat to win. His best contests include the 100-meter run, the long jump and the high jump, but has the athleticism and potential to win at anything he competes in. Outside from being a top competitor in track and field, it also fulfills the purpose of keeping him trained and toned for basketball and football.
On the basketball court, he has been no less impressive. At 6-foot-4, Virgil plays the small forward position and played a big part in helping MDCA to a 21-7 record in the 2020-21 season. For the season, Virgil played in all but two games and averaged 16.1 points per game while pulling down 8.5 rebounds per game. Virgil is no slouch on the defensive end either and averaged a shade under two steals per game at 1.9.
Virgil managed to shoot 60% from the field and has carried his momentum from the 2020-21 season into the 2021-22 season. MDCA has only played one game so far, but Virgil is picking up right where he left off and hopes to carry the Bulldogs back to the playoffs, this time as a team captain.
While he dominates in both basketball and track and field, Virgil’s real passion lies on the football field. He’s played nearly every position on the offensive end and even plays full-time defense for the Bulldogs. Whether it’s at quarterback, running back, wide receiver or defense, Virgil has been dominant.
“I’m just really an athlete,” he said. “I play everything, but in college I’ll probably play receiver.” Just in saying this, Virgil shows his inept ability to be aware of what his strengths are and how he can best help his team succeed.
In the 2021-22 season, Virgil played mostly wide receiver and managed to pull in 35 catches for 789 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also carried the ball 19 times for 194 yards and five touchdowns, which means he accounted for a total of 983 yards and 17 touchdowns for the Bulldogs.
Throughout his career, Virgil’s numbers are astounding. He has 82 catches for 1,735 yards and 22 touchdowns. He’s also totaled 966 rushing yards and 21 rushing touchdowns while throwing for three more at the quarterback position. Defensively, Virgil has accounted for seven career interceptions, including two in the 2021-22 season and four in the 2020-21 season.
“What I like about football is the ability to be free, forget about everything else that is going on in life, and being able to have fun with my teammates,” he said. “I have been doing it since I was little and my siblings, they always wanted me to play and do it for a bigger cause really.”
After his graduation from MDCA in 2022, Virgil is committed to play college football at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. It’s a long way from his hometown in Mount Dora, but Virgil is eager for his chance to prove himself at the college level. While starring on the football field, Virgil also plans to major in either business or sports medicine.
