Unlike most siblings, Jordan and Tyson Mills fight for fun

PALM COAST, Fla. — Matanzas High School is home to some impressive athletes over the years. Adding to that list of names to remember are the Mills brothers, Jordan and Tyson. Each of the brothers compete for the Matanzas High School Pirates. Aside from being some of the top wrestlers in their district, the brothers also play for the Pirates football team, but their first love will always be wrestling.

Tyson, the older of the two brothers, competes at the 152-pound level, while younger brother Jordan wrestles at the 160-pound weight class. They’ve both accomplished big things already but have failed to do one thing: win state. Unfortunately for senior Tyson, time to make that dream a reality ran out at the 2021 state wrestling championship. Nonetheless, he wouldn’t be denied the experience of a lifetime.

“This weekend at the state tournament I learned a lot,” Tyson said with appreciation. “It was a great learning experience for me and I had to work really hard to get there. When you get to that level, it just shows you how much harder you have to work.”

Jordan had a similar experience.

“It was just an overall great experience for me and I was really humbled by it,” he said. “My coaches really drive me to be better and my brother really pushes me to be the best I can be.”

Unlike his older brother who graduates in 2022, Jordan has three years of wrestling ahead of him and a chance to win the coveted state title.

Only in ninth grade, Jordan is the first freshman in Matanzas High School history to qualify for the state tournament. While neither brother managed to win a state title, they both garnered second place finishes at the regional level. Both brothers have also won numerous individual titles in their respective weight classes during the 2020-21 wrestling season.

Matanzas High School has a long history of wrestling excellence and it’s been helped along by the Mills family. To date, Matanzas has had 54 state qualifiers, 13 state placers and one state champion. They’ve also won 10 district championships, their latest coming in 2018. Both of the Mills brothers qualifying for state marked the first time in Matanzas school history that a freshman and senior brother both qualified for state in the same year.

Regardless of what the future holds for the Mills brothers, their place is secured in the Matanzas High School record books.
