LiAngelo Ball faces another setback in NBA pursuit

GREENSBORO, N.C. — LiAngelo Ball has had one of the most unique and followed paths to professional basketball we have possibly ever seen.

Growing up, LiAngelo was the middle brother of two other basketball players. All three Ball brothers had college scholarships at UCLA to play basketball. LiAngelo was just a sophomore in high school when he got this full scholarship offer.

After enrolling at UCLA and then being suspended, he went to Lithuania to play professionally while preparing for the NBA Draft. The NBA Draft came and went and LiAngelo was still not selected to be a part of the league.

He underwent ankle surgery and then tried to get on an NBA team for the next year. He was given a chance by the Detroit Pistons on a training camp deal but it didn’t last long and he was cut.

His outspoken father, Lavar Ball, had some choice words to say about the situation.

“The people in Detroit are great. I love the fans, but the franchise over there is raggedy,” he said. “They don’t know a good player. … They’re gonna learn the hard way. My boys are gonna end up together playing somewhere.”

LiAngelo was upset but another opportunity came and then was immediately shut down as the league had stopped all of their games because of COVID-19. LiAngelo never played a game for them.

Over a year had passed and at this point both of his brothers were in the NBA. LiAngelo finally got a chance to play in the NBA summer league for the Charlotte Hornets. He played really well but was left off the NBA training camp roster so he could not play in any preseason games. The Charlotte Hornets G-League team called and he was signed to play with the Greensboro Swarm to prove that he is good enough to be on the Charlotte Hornets roster.

LiAngelo stated in an interview saying his ultimate goal was to make the NBA with his brothers.

“My goal still is to make the Hornets team so I can play with my brother,” he said. “Get to the NBA and playing with Melo. That’s still what it is. I’m already highly motivated, so that’s extra.”

It looked as if LiAngelo was close to that after his promising start in showing why he is capable of being an NBA player but then things got worse. He went on to get fewer and fewer minutes while still producing over the next two games. The next three games he didn’t even play after a new addition to the team, James Bouknight, took all of his minutes. This is just another setback for LiAngelo in his ultimate goal to make the NBA. We will see how this works out the rest of the season and if LiAngelo will get a chance at the NBA eventually.
