Q&A with Jadyn Palaschuk of the Moose Jaw rotary track club

MOOSE JAW, Saskatchewan — A Q&A with Jadyn Palaschuk who is a runner for the Moose Jaw rotary track club.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
Jadyn Palaschuk: My name is Jadyn Palaschuk and I go to Central Collegiate. I’m in grade 11 and I’ve been running since I was about 9. I am now a part of the Rotary Track Club and my coaches are Scott Mitchell and Jason Roney. My dad has always been by my side through everything as well. They all have definitely had a big impact on my performances and who I am today.

What sport/sports do you compete in? How/why did you get started?
Palaschuk: I run year-round doing cross country in the fall then indoor track leading into outdoor track. I really started taking things more seriously in grade 7. I just kind of fell in love with the sport ever since. I love pushing myself to see what I can accomplish.

What type of achievements have you accomplished already?
Palaschuk: In 2019, I went to Legion Nationals for track representing Team Sask. I placed 7th in the 2000m, 9th in the 1200m, and 5th in the medley relay. Earlier that summer, I also went to tri-provs and got silver in steeplechase. Into the fall, I ran high school cross country with Coach Mitchell. I won provincials and so did our team!! I went to nationals for cross country and placed 15th later that season. Since then I haven’t got to compete much because of covid until now. Last weekend I just won high school provincials and our team defended the title! I can’t wait to see what else the future has to come!!

What is your goal in the sport/sports?
Palaschuk: My big goal has always been to make the Olympic team. Obviously that’s still a ways away but it’s always going to be a big goal in mind! Of course I still have tons of small goals throughout each year though!!

What do you love about the sport/sports?
Palaschuk: I pretty much fell in love with running when I just learned how to. I love pushing my body to its limits to see what it can do. I’m addicted to seeing the progress that comes with it too. It just shows how all the hard work I’ve put in has finally paid off. Especially this past year due to covid. To me it’s all mind over matter and I just love challenging myself every day.

Advice to others interested in starting?
Palaschuk: I would say if you are thinking about joining track or cross country, to just do it. Running shows how mentally tough you really are. It’s a way for you to take control over your body and see what it can do. Like any other sport, you train hard and compete to see how far you’ve come and it’s really satisfying to see the hard work pay off. As it’s an individual sport, it’s still also a team sport and the environment it creates is just amazing. It’s different than any other sport I’ve played. For example, hockey, basketball, or dance are all great sports but to me the environment track creates is a different type dopamine that I don’t feel with anything else. Everyone is always so uplifting and encouraging in the Moose Jaw Rotary Track Club so I would definitely recommend considering it. No one ever judges what level you are at and our team is very supportive and we always have each others backs.
