Indiana Hoosiers women’s basketball team is primed for success
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Teams are defined through their legacy which, in turn, is reinforced by their present pedigree. Success is the barometer, but the real signifier is how consistent that sports team is in terms of recruiting, developing players and their runs in key tournaments. For the Indiana Hoosiers women’s basketball team, that success has been maintained for the better part of eight years under the guidance of head coach Teri Moren.
Moren has brought success to this program which no coach has been able to do in the past and has continued to do so this season as the Hoosiers are a nationally ranked in the top 6. Moren is an Indiana native so her ties and motivations with the school go beyond the paycheck.
“Along with my staff, we are dedicated to building successful young women on and off the court,” Moren said. “I am truly blessed to be a part of the Hoosier Nation, who continue to show their love and gratitude for our team. We see you and appreciate you. As a lifelong Hoosier, I will continue to represent this incredible university with great pride and dedication.”
It’s her staunch drive and will to lifting this program to greater heights which makes this Indiana team a force to be reckoned with. It’s a team that had a 21-6 winning record last season and who made it all the way to the Elite Eight. It happens to be the school’s best ever finish in women’s basketball.
Moren described the sensation of reaching that stage of the NCAA tournament.
“The best part was being with my players and our staff,” she said. “We were still in a bubble, right, so it was just the 32 of us. Always together and just watching them do their work and with every game that came and went it was just the joy of watching this group. How excited they were and the joy they had in moving to the next round.”
There is palatable enthusiasm around this program which is off to fairly good start by losing just one game of the six they’ve played. But it should be reiterated that this women’s basketball team would be in the basement if it were not for the guidance and mentorship of Coach Moren. Prior to her arrival, the Hoosiers only once reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament and that was back in 1983.
When asked about the most important thing she did in turning this program around, Coach Moren responded with insight.
“Sometimes you have to lose with the group before you can win with the group,” she said. “We just continue to get a little bit better every year. We finally have the players that fit us that fit the work ethic that we’re about. They love each other too. This group has by far been my tightest group.”
Coach Moren is in the middle of constructing a winning pedigree at Indiana and this has been noted by athletic director, Scott Dolson, who recently offered her a contract extension. Moren is a coach who understands what is needed to win and, more importantly, how to go about accomplishing that goal. She has confidence in this team and her talented players have faith in her. It’s a recipe that should deliver immediate and prolonged success.
