No playoffs in a disappointing season for Summerville football

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — The Summerville Green Wave football season ended weeks ago, and fans of the program have very little to hang their hat on this season. What was a good start in the non-region part of their schedule quickly evaporated as Summerville lost a string of close games in their region schedule which cost them a chance at making the state playoffs. Now all that is left to do is look ahead and try to figure out how to improve for the next season.

Summerville started its football season 3-1 in non-region games. Their only loss came in the first week of the season when they were dominated by Gaffney High School 35-7. Following that loss, the team went on a bit of a win streak which included two away wins over both Berkeley High School and Stratford High School. The most impressive win, however, may have come at home against Goose Creek High School where the Green Wave won 20-13, really highlighting how good the defense can be.

Following the 3-1 start, Summerville shifted its schedule to region play. The first game of this stretch could not have gone better as they dominated Stall High School in a 63-12 win. Unfortunately for the Green Wave, after this game their fortunes would take a turn. Summerville would lose all three of their next region games, leaving them with a 1-3 record in region play and a 4-4 record overall. Going from 4-1 to 4-4 is surely not how the Green Wave pictured their season, but there was one game that was truly heartbreaking.

In what was their closest loss of the season, Summerville lost on the road to Ashley Ridge High School 10-6 in a region game. The six points were the least number of points they scored in any game this season. Despite holding their opponent to 10 points, which was the 2nd least amount of points their team gave up this season, the offensive struggles were too much to overcome and they lost a heartbreaker there.

The final game of the season was on the road to Goose Creek High School where the Green Wave ended their season on a sour note, losing 41-27 and failing to qualify for the playoffs.

A bit of good news looking forward for the Green Wave is that they will be bringing back quarterback Emmet Johnson. With his junior season finished, the soon-to-be-senior quarterback will bring a lot of experience to the offense next season.

If the Green Wave want to reverse their fortunes from this past season, they will have to step up in the close games. Their inability to perform at the region level will also have to be addressed, but both of these are fixable issues. If they can improve in these areas in the off season, we could very well be talking about a playoff appearance for Summerville next season.
