Joshua Flores excels as Falcons’ interim head coach

PEYTON, Colo. — Coach Joshua Flores, a native of Colorado Springs, graduated from Rampart High School in Colorado Springs in the Class of 1991. Flores then joined Colorado State-Pueblo in Pueblo, Colorado, where he received his bachelor’s degree in exercise science and health promotion with an education minor.

Flores was a teacher in health and physical education at Estes Park High School in Estes Park, Colorado, for three years. In 2012, Flores would go on to join Falcon High School to teach health and physical education, coach wrestling and coach baseball. However, this year, Flores accepted to take on the role of interim head coach for the Falcon High School varsity football team.

Flores, who was the team’s defensive coordinator, would take on the reigns after the former head coach Darrel Gorham would no longer be acting with the program. Falcon High School Principal Darryl Bonds thanked and commended Flores for his leadership and willingness to help lead the team through the unfortunate circumstances.

Flores came in with vast football coaching experience. From 2014 to 2019, Flores was the outside linebackers coach at Rampart High School under Rob Royer and Troy Ward, winning two league titles in a row. He also coached the Estes Park High School football team as the assistant offensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

It has been a good experience for Flores at Falcon High School.

“We finished the season as co-champions of our league with a six and three record with an RPI of .53,” he said. “(We were) 18th in the standings but because of a CHSAA rule, we missed the playoffs due to a tiebreaker.”

The lack of playoff football did not take away from the positive impact that Flores has had on the team. He has been able to turn a new page for the team.

“We had 15 seniors that led the turnaround,” he said. “They really bought into the new direction we established and set the new standard for Falcon football. We are a talented, hardnosed, tough, physical and disciplined bunch.”

Flores’ proudest moment was being co-champions this past season, however, he has also celebrated the achievements of his players.

“We ended up with five first team All-League selections, six second team All-League selections and five honorable mentions,” he said. “Just a great testament to how well these boys responded and came together to be successful.”

Even though the season has ended, Flores is still working to make sure his senior players get some collegiate options. Flores also has the future of the Falcon High School football team in mind.

“Build a respected program that continually produces quality young men,” he said regarding the future of the team. “Wins and losses will come and go but the students we help mold and mentor will be the benchmark of how successful we will be.”
