Close losses cost Marcus High School
FLOWER MOUND, Texas — Marcus High School football had a great regular season this year, going 8-2 before entering the playoffs. This season had a lot of ups and downs but one common theme throughout was that a lot of the games played were close ones. In fact, of their 11 games they played this season, five of those games were decided by one possession. For Marcus, the inability to capitalize in some of those games is what will haunt them as they look back and reflect on the season that was.
The first game of the season saw Marcus get off to a poor start. They would lose their opener to Dallas-Jesuit 38-34. With only four points separating the teams, this is one that Marcus High School would love to have back. Starting the season off on the right note and proving to themselves and others that they can win the close games would have made a statement early in the season. Unfortunately for the Marauders, it set up a theme that would come back to haunt them later in the season.
Following the loss to Dallas-Jesuit, Marcus would go on a two-game win streak before running into district rival, Flower Mound High School. Just like Jesuit, this game would end in a one possession loss, 17-14. Starting off district play with a loss like this is difficult, but it is even more frustrating that they scored the fewest number of points on offense they had all season in this game.
Following the Flower Mound loss, Marcus would go on their best streak of the season, winning six straight games. During this stretch, they even won an overtime game against Coppell High School, overcoming some of the struggles they had seen in their previous losses of not being able to close out close games.
With a regular season record of 8-2, Marcus High School would qualify for the playoffs where they would host Prosper High School in the first round. This is where they once again fell victim to the theme of all of their losses this season: losing by one possession. Prosper would emerge victorious on the day, pulling off a 28-21 win. The loss would end Marcus High School’s season, leaving them with nothing but close losses to show for it.
Marcus lost three games this past season and all of them were by a combined 14 points. Only 14 points separated Marcus from moving on in the playoffs and having an undefeated season. As the team prepares for next season, they need to somehow see this as a positive and know that they are right on the edge of greatness. A few different plays, results and scores and this is a team that can compete for a state championship. However, for now they are just left with three close losses and 14 points to reflect on.
