The winning Spartans of Glenbrook North

NORTHBROOK, Ill. — Established in 2003, the Glenbrook North Spartans represent Northbrook High School in the Illinois State Basketball Championship and are a Central Suburban North Conference member. The official colors of the team are dark green and gold.

Glenbrook North’s boys basketball team was led by head coach Dave Weber, an inducted member of the Illinois Basketball Coach Association (IBCA) Hall of Fame, until his retirement in 2019.

Glenbrook North won the 2005 State Championship by defeating Carbondale High School with a score of 63-51, ending their season with a 32-2 record.

The 2005 state championship victory for the Spartans was quite remarkable in several ways, in the sense that, apart from being their first state championship victory, Glenbrook North had a full season of impressive and outstanding appearances and performances.

The successes of Glenbrook North are not a coincidence, as Coach Weber, who resigned in 2019 after 37 years of basketball coaching career and 26 years of coaching Glenbrook North, was a seasoned coach and very outstanding amongst all the coaches in Illinois.

Weber, who led Glenbrook North to win over 400 games, began his coaching career at Glenbrook North 1995. He led the Spartans to multiple Central Suburban League Championships and three times to the state tournament.

Coach Weber had a very successful coaching career, leading 14 teams to the Illinois State Championship from 2002 to 2012. In 2018, Weber was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coach Association Hall of Fame. He resigned as the Glenbrook North coach in November 2019 after defeating Ogden International School of Chicago 57-26.

The Glenbrook North basketball team is currently led by their second-year coach, Quin Hayes. Hayes took over from Coach Weber in April 2020 as the new head coach of the Spartans.

“It’s a school I’m very familiar with and have kept tabs on. It’s a great program in a great community,” Hayes said when he announced his appointment as the new head coach. “I’m looking forward to the relationship with student-athletes and parents and building on that rich tradition.”

Before he was appointed the Spartans’ head coach in 2020, Hayes was the head coach of the Saint Viator Lions basketball team, his alma mater, for six years. He led the team to win four regional championships in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 and one sectional championship in 2016.

Beginning in April 2020, Hayes led the team to various championships and won the Thanksgiving Tournament Championship over the Saint Pats with a 47-43 score.

Hayes is now a member of the Illinois Basketball Coach Association and is poised in this basketball championship league season to not only maintain the mind-blowing records of his predecessor but also set new championship records.

It is not just the boys basketball team that is making waves. The girls team is dominating in their league as well. While winning games and bringing trophies home, the girls team is also saving lives by raising funds for research.

In 2017, the Glenbrook North girls basketball team hosted a shootout competition to raise money for spinal muscular atrophy and respiratory distress type 1 research. It was a huge success.

“I could support a good cause by doing what I love most, playing basketball,” Coach Danielle Fluegge, the girls basketball coach, said.

There is no better combination than entertaining sports lovers and saving them when they need medical attention.
