A.J. Walker evolving into greatness

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The ideal setting for young people to pursue their development is at college. The learning opportunities are vast, expansive and omnipresent. It would take a monumental effort to avoid gaining something from a college experience whether it’s positive or negative. For those who want to soak up every moment and have a deep appreciation for having the chance to be at college, they are the ones who most likely thrive. They are the ones who earn their evolution. No one has merited such a distinction than A.J. Walker of the Air Force Falcons.

The 6-foot-2 guard is in his senior year with the Falcons where he’s soaring to majestic heights. Already, Walker has collected honors in the Sunshine Slam tournament where he was named the Sunshine Slam MVP as well as a member of the Sunshine Slam All-Tournament team. His outstanding performances in that tournament have transitioned smoothly into the regular season.

A.J. Walker leads the team in points averaging 19.3 per game. That’s a total of four points more than what he achieved last season and 7.9 points more than his college career average. The reason for his improved scoring stems from his ability to shoot the basketball better. His efficiency this season has improved dramatically. Last season his field goal percentage was at 39.8 percent while this year he’s shooting at 58.2 percent from the field. Such a discrepancy from one year to the next can only mean that Walker is employing his time during his final year to seize the opportunity.

In fact, A.J. Walker has improved in every shooting category. His three-point shooting is up from 39.8 to 43.5% and so is his free throw percentage where it was at 74% in his junior year to 80.0 percent this season. It’s admirable to witness such a positive progression from someone who does have basketball pedigree in his lineage.

His father, Anthony Walker, played basketball at Park University and was a major influencer in A.J.’s sports career. But sports isn’t A.J. Walker’s only interest. He decided to come to the Academy because he wanted to get the best education where he’s interested in systems engineering major. He’s also considered a career in cyber warfare.

A.J. Walker is utilizing his time at the Academy to the fullest. He’s playing exceptional basketball while also having academic interests. It’s a balance that is rare to find when talking about student-athletes. Walker is a remarkable individual. He’s a leader whose demeanor and comportment should be the defining example of how someone should truly experience the college lifestyle.
