Dereon Seabron goes from a role player to star for North Carolina State

CARY, N.C. (BVM) — Dereon Seabron has made a name for himself as a college basketball star in his second season with the North Carolina State Wolfpack.

Coming out of high school, Seabron was recruited by some big schools but wasn’t a top recruit by any means. He wasn’t offered by many big-time college basketball schools. Besides NC State, his other Division I offers included East Carolina, Providence, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the biggest one of them all, Big Ten Conference school Minnesota. His lack of recruitment from these big schools landed him outside of the top 100 prospects on all of the recruiting sites, but he was still one of the best players in the state of Virginia. Seabron ultimately decided to take his talents to NC State where he could compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference against some of the best teams in the nation such as Duke and North Carolina.

In his first year with the Wolfpack, he was limited to a role player position off the bench. In just 17 minutes per game, he was held to only five points per game as a freshman. With the departure of two of their top scorers in Devon Daniels and D.J. Funderburk, the role has significantly changed for Seabron. He is now the star for the Wolfpack and one of the early top players in the country. Going from just five points per game to over 20 so far this year, and additionally providing over 10 rebounds per game, is one of the best increases you will ever see in college basketball.

“He has come out of his shell more than when we recruited him,” head coach Kevin Keatts said of Seabron’s improvement. “The way he is playing is unbelievable. You aren’t going to find anybody — unless they came off a major injury — that will have stats as he does from one year to another. That being said, he was a big part of last year’s run when we won those five games at the end.”

That improved play at the end of last year has certainly carried on to this season. The large increase in rebounding numbers has helped his game and Seabron attributes that to his massive outburst offensively.

“One of the things (that) has been working has been me getting downhill. Another thing is me attacking the offensive glass. One of the other things has been me getting defensive rebounds and pushing in transition,” Seabron said after a big NC State win which had him excited for the rest of the season to come.

Seabron has gone from nowhere on NBA scouts’ radars to a player that now is slated to be a second-round talent with the possibility of even moving up higher on 2022 NBA mock draft boards. Every NBA team can use an energy player who will work relentlessly on the glass and on defense for their team. This has truly been one of the best and most surprising storylines in college basketball this season and Seabron has this NC State team rolling. Big things should still be coming for Seabron and NC State as he has developed into one of the best and most exciting players in college basketball.
