Hope College’s Tyler George represents Flying Dutchmen basketball well

HOLLAND, Mich. – Wherever you are in the world, no matter you’re wishing to apply for and hoping to get, there are limitations. There’s a finite number of places that are available for student-athletes who want to join Division I or even Division II programs just so they can continue to perform what they enjoy doing the most. For some, it’s an avenue to get out of their current situation and for others it’s about keeping the dream alive of reaching the pros. For Tyler George of the Flying Dutchmen from Hope College, he believes there is no better place to play in than the Devos Fieldhouse.

“The town of Holland separates Hope from most Div. III schools and adds a lot to the experience,” George told Hope College Athletics. “The culture and environment offer what I looked for in a college in terms of the student body, professors, and campus life. There is no better place to play in than the Devos Fieldhouse in front of the best fans in the country, and for a great coach like Coach Mitchell.”

The 6-foot-1 junior has repaid the fans for their devotion and the coach for his mentorship by being the best scorer on the team. George is averaging 14.6 points per game shooting at a rate of 50.0 percent from the field and 42.0 percent from the three-point line. Those numbers indicate that he’s an efficient shooter. Certainly, numbers that prove that he’s carrying the team in the shooting department.

When the ball is in George’s hands, teams with scouting capabilities will be aware of his shooting prowess which is why, through the coaching of Greg Mitchell, Tyler George has learned to distribute the ball to the open man and rely on his teammates to make the bucket. George has 22 assists in this young season which is a large amount for someone who is simply a designated shooter. He doesn’t bring up the ball or direct the flow of the offense. He’s a catch and shoot player and does so to great effect. He credits his father for his basketball IQ.

When asked to name a role model who has impacted his life, George immediately said his father because he coached him on the court his entire life and through high school.

“My dad [is my role model] because he coached me on the court all my life and through high school, but impacted me more off the court with how much effort and passion he put into being the best father figure he could be to my brother and I,” George said.

Hope College has a pure scorer and a deeply empathetic player in Tyler George. He’s the type of individual that can bring reason to the team and calm things down on the court should the situation necessitate it. He’s no doubt a valued and indispensable member of this Flying Dutchmen roster and, more importantly, appreciates and wants to do well for this program.
