Illinois Wesleyan Titans mens basketball off to fast start

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan Titans are off to a hot start this season with a 7-0 record thanks to the stellar play of their co-Captains Matthew Leritz and Cory Noe. The two seniors were key factors in the teams College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Championship (CCIW) win last season, and they are making it clear that they have the same aspirations this season.

The Titans are headed by Coach Ron Rose who has had a long tenured with the team with a career record of 277-130. His influence as coach can be pointed to as the reason so many players are able to thrive in his system. During his time as head coach of the Titans, he has coached seven Division III All-American and 29 All-Conference players including Matthew Leritz. The former Division III Coach of the Year was a Titan himself from 1984-1988 where he won two CCIW tournament championships.

Both captains have helped the team to a No. 1 seed in the CCIW conference with commanding victories over the Chicago Maroons and the Carroll Pioneers in back-to-back games. Leritz has been shooting the ball extremely well over this win streak averaging 16.1 points per game while shooting 60% from the field and 50% from behind the three point line which is third highest in the conference. He is also third in the conference in rebounding averaging 10.1 per game grabbing 15 boards in the win over the Pioneers on Dec. 4.

Cory Noe looks to bounce back after a quiet performance in his last game out putting up a total of just six points, but his leadership at guard has fueled the team in their victories thus far. He is second on the team in scoring averaging 15.6 points per game and he too has been shooting the three ball affectively at 42% this season.

The Titans also have a few other pieces that have contributed to this win streak like senior Peter Lambesis, and junior Luke Yoder who both are averaging 10 points per game respectively, taking some of the load off of Leritz and Noe. It wouldn’t be a surprise if this team ended the season as the No. 1 seed behind Coach Rose with their ability to score and shoot the three ball. The Titans will be facing their toughest challenge this season going up against the 7-1 Wheaton Thunder so it will be interesting to see if they can push the win streak to eight.
