Garrett Nelson leading UW-Stevens Point in his senior year

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — Garrett Nelson is having a massive season for the UW-Stevens Point Pointers.

Nelson grew up in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin (about two hours southeast of Stevens Point) and played basketball for Beaver Dam High School. He is one of the most decorated basketball players from Beaver Dam High School and left with the most career points. He played well all four years of high school but stood out in his junior and senior seasons.

Nelson was named honorable mention All-State, Wisconsin Little Ten Conference Player of the Year, and a first team All-Wisconsin Little Conference Player as a junior. As a senior, he was first team All-State, Wisconsin Little Ten Conference Player of the Year (for the second time), and a first team All-Wisconsin Little Conference Player (for the second time).

Nelson chose to attend and play basketball at UW-Stevens Point. UW-Stevens Point is a DIII team but one of most of the most historically successful in the nation. They have four DIII National Championships. Nelson had a limited impact off the bench for this storied program as a freshman. He played in 28 games averaging 3.4 points per game and a little over one assist.

Nelson’s performance dropped in his sophomore year. He played less than ten minutes a game and only scored 2.6 points per game. However, he performed exceptionally well at the free-throw line, going 25-27.

Something changed for Nelson between his sophomore and junior seasons. Nelson became a starter and a well-rounded player. In the COVID-19 shortened season, Nelson scored 10.9 points per game and averaged almost 29 minutes on the court. Garrett’s court vision also improved, and he averaged over two assists per game. He also became a pest on defense, with his 1.3 steals per game.

Stevens Point only played nine games last season. However, even though the season was short, Garrett Nelson thrived. He averaged 15.2 points per game and led his team with almost four assists per game. His best game came against UW-Oshkosh. He led his team in scoring with 22 points and had seven assists. His strong regular season performance was recognized, and he was named an All-Conference honorable mention.

Garrett Nelson is playing his last year of college basketball right now. Stevens Point is 3-4, but Nelson is playing well. He is scoring 17.4 points per game with three assists. It looks like Nelson is in for his best season yet.
