Southlake Carroll Dragons: Undefeated no more
SOUTHLAKE, Texas — The Southlake Carroll varsity football team was out for revenge this past season after losing in the state championship in the previous season. The perennial powerhouse in Texas seemed to be on a mission all season, but ended up falling short of the mark as they neared that finish line. Despite the poor end to the season, the Dragons still showed plenty of signs of encouragement and talent in what was nearly a perfect season.
As mentioned, the Dragons were coming off of a state championship loss last season, where they lost to rival school Westlake. Losing after getting so close to the end goal is never an easy thing to cope with, but in the beginning of the season, the Dragons seemed to have a special spark about their play and showed no signs of a “championship hangover.” The Dragons would win every non-district game to start their season, including an impressive 36-35 win over Rockwall-Heath High School, who are a powerhouse of their own. The Dragons would wrap up district play at a perfect 4-0 as they prepared to enter the district section of their schedule.
The district section of the Dragons’ schedule would see them continue their incredible run as they dominated every opponent that stood in their way. The Dragons were so dominant in district play that no team came within three possessions of them in any game. The closest game the Dragons had was when they defeated V.R. Eaton High School 47-23. The Dragons would finish the district section of their schedule with a perfect 10-0 record as they would then enter the playoffs.
The playoffs would see the Dragons continue to steamroll the competition. Their first playoff game would see the Dragons dominate North Crowley High School 42-20. Next, they would obliterate Midland Legacy High School followed by another win after this against Lewisville High School. Another win the following week against Allen High School would set up a date with Duncanville High School in the state semifinals.
At a perfect 14-0, the Dragons traveled to Duncanville to take on a strong Panthers side. Unfortunately for the Dragons, this is where their season would end. The Panthers high powered offense coupled with an elite defense was just too much for the Dragons to overcome on the day as they would lose in dramatic fashion 35-9. The nine points on offense was the least that the Dragons had scored all season, being far lower than their previous low of 31 that they scored earlier in the season. The 35 points also tied a season high for points allowed, which they had only done previously this season in their second game win over Rockwall-Heath.
It was a disappointing end to the season for the Dragons once again as they will now have to wait until next year to potentially capture the elusive state title which they continue to fall just short of. Next season will be an important one for the fans of the Dragons so that they can see if their team is still moving forwards despite back to back seasons of playoff heartbreak.
