Harry Liu proving why he’s the best player on the Capilano Blues

NORTH VANCOUVER, British Columbia — To be recognized as the best player on the team, there needs to be a clear and distinguishable gap between the anointed number one and the successor in second best place. A noticeable gulf in performance that is apparent in the stats column and also visible on court. But the numbers are just a sliver of what makes that individual the identified go-to guy on the team. There are intangible elements which clearly define the value of an athlete and helps solidify their status as the best player on the team, whether it’s their leadership qualities, their ability to be a reliable teammate or even their willingness to sacrifice their own stat padding numbers for the greater good of the team. In the case of the Capilano Blues’ Harry Liu, he’s a player who has earned the distinction of being the best on this team.

The 6-foot-4 guard is having a remarkable start to the season where he’s started in all nine games so far for the Blues. His performances on the court have given head coach, Cassidy Kannemeyer, no choice but to allocate Liu the most minutes on the team where he’s averaging a hefty 31.3 minutes per game.

During his time, Liu is making team-defining statements. He leads the team in scoring where he’s averaging 15.7 points per game. That’s off the back of some incredibly efficient shooting as he has a field goal percentage of 53.2%. It’s a stat that will attract attention from professional scouts. But where Liu falls a little flat is beyond the arc.

His three-point shooting is somewhat mediocre compared to his shooting from field, but he still manages to deliver a decent average which stands at 35.5%. It’s not an awful number but more should be expected of someone who is prolific from mid-range and in the paint.

Still, he does make up for his flat three-point shooting by being a solid free throw shooter. This season he has taken 18 shots and missed only four to give him a good average of 77.8%.

While it is a known quantity in basketball to have a guard be the designated shooter, it is somewhat baffling for a player in that position to lead the team in rebounds. Liu is averaging 8.9 rebounds a game for the Blues which is 2.8 more than the person who has the second-best rebounding average. It’s astonishing that a player who’s only 6-foot-4 can lead the team in rebounding while posting up considerable numbers in that category.

These numbers are a testament to Liu’s character and ethos. He could be content by merely being the best shooter on the team and getting the deserved praise for performing that role well, but he doesn’t want to stop there. By being the team’s lead rebounder, he’s displaying that extra effort for the betterment of the Capilano Blues basketball team. It’s a veritable sign of his leadership qualities and a definite indicator that he has earned the label of being the best player on the team.
