Viliami Teu is staying in the area at San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Mountain View High School’s Viliami Teu will be sticking around the San Jose area for his college football days. He signed with San Jose State University as the NCAA Division I signing period began.

Teu saw a successful season at Saint Francis High in Mountain View, the same school that San Jose State coach Brent Brennan attended. Teu had 2,211 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns for the Lancers this past year.

Teu will be part of a thorough recruiting class looking to get San Jose State back into bowl contention. The Spartans went 5-7 in 2021 with a 3-5 Mountain West record. The Spartans have not reached bowl games in consecutive seasons since 1986.

Teu finished with the ninth-most rushing yards among players in California this past year. He was the Player of the Year in the West Catholic Athletic League. He also averaged 7.6 yards per carry in his three years with the Lancers’ varsity football team.

“If you’re good mentally, the game is easy,” Teu said.

Teu said he admires many prominent NFL running backs, including Jonathan Taylor, Dalvin Cook and Josh Jacobs.

He is also active off the field, as he is a member of the board of directors of Dreams33. The non-profit organization helps provide financial aid for foster youth looking to attend various schools.

Teu is the third member of his family tree to play for the Spartans. He is a nephew of Viliami Fehoko, a former defensive lineman for the Spartans. He is also the younger brother of Romero Teu, a former running back for the team.

Coach Brent Brennan wants to help the Spartans go forward and be competitive.

“My job is to get us ready to win and get us ready to play to our expectations for the season,” Brennan said after his team’s season-ending loss to Fresno State. Teu will be a critical part of team’s future.

The Spartans’ recruiting class includes two other prominent high school running backs in Camdan McWright from St. Genevieve in Panorama City, California, and Jakob Galloway of Banning in Wilmington, California. Teu, McWright and Galloway have a combined total of 5,217 rushing yards and 65 touchdowns this past year.

Other players in the Spartans’ recruiting class include St. Francis High offensive lineman Denaris DeRosa Jr., a descendant of baseball icon Joe DiMaggio. The team also has two outside linebacker recruits named Justin who were born on the same date: Justin Eklund from Folsom, California, and Justin Stearns from St. Augustine in San Diego.
