Q&A with Natalie Doig: Holy Trinity freshman swimmer who is breaking records

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Natalie Doig is in the 9th grade at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy (HT) and competes on both swimming and golf teams at the private school. Within the last few months, she broke several swimming records at HT! We sat down with this remarkable athlete to find out about her love for both sports and her accomplishments.

How did you get started in swimming?

Natalie Doig: I’ve always been around the pool, and I can’t really remember not knowing how to swim. I did summer leagues and fell in love with it and then started swimming year-round.

In addition to swimming for Holy Trinity, what team do you swim for?

Doig: I swim for Indian River Aquatics (RATS), year-round.

What is your favorite stroke and event?

Doig: My favorite stroke is freestyle, but I am still trying to figure out my favorite event. I swim everything from the 50 to the 1000 (1000 isn’t high school so the longest high school event is 500) and I’m still trying to find which is my favorite.

Where have you competed outside of Florida for events?

Doig: This summer I qualified to represent the state of Florida at The Southern Zones Championships, which was in Mississippi. It was a 5 day meet with 12 or so states.

You broke some records in swimming this season! How did that feel and what are some other accomplishments?

Doig: This season I broke the records for the 50, 200, and 500 Freestyle events. It felt really good to break the records because in 7th grade those times seemed impossible to reach. Being selected for southern zones was a huge accomplishment for me because only 8 girls in my age group from the state were selected. I had 4 top-eight finishes at the meet and was part of the first-place winning 200 free relay.

I have qualified for the Florida Age Group State Championships (FLAGS) since I was ten. This past season, I had all top-eight finishes, with three 3rd places. At the Florida Senior Championships, I placed second in one of my events. Last high school season, I qualified for states as an eighth-grader and made it to finals in the 100 free.

What are your goals in swimming?

Doig: One of my major goals for swim in the next year or so is to qualify for the Speedo Futures Championships. It is a national meet where the qualifying times are challenging. I have been working really hard and my times are getting closer to them. For high school swimming, I am hoping that I final at states this year and place better than before.

In addition to swimming on the HT Swim Team, you also play on the HT Golf Team during the same season! How did the golf season go this year?

Doig: In golf this year, all my teammates have worked hard, and we were able to move up to Regionals. Personally, I have worked on my consistency this season, and it paid off at Districts.

What are your future goals and plans for golf?

Doig: In the off-season, I will probably look for local tournaments, and play for fun with friends.

Anything else you would like to add?

Doig: Nothing that I have done would have been possible without my parents. They have supported me throughout every step of all my sports and I couldn’t have done swimming or golf without them!

We also reached out to her coaches to give us some insight into this remarkable young lady, and here is what they had to say:

HT Swim coach, Tiffany DeAngelis says, “Natalie is an awesome person all around! She always has a smile & her determination makes for a fierce competitor! Natalie is skilled in all four strokes and in multiple races, it is definitely fun to watch her race!”

Jeremy Wada, also an HT Swim Coach, has this to say about Natalie, “ She is an amazing swimmer that I am very honored to have coached these past two seasons. She is always looking for ways to improve herself and better her times. She excels at all four strokes and is constantly pushing herself. She is always cheerful and when she isn’t racing in the pool she is cheering on her teammates and friends. I can’t wait to see all she will be able to accomplish over the coming years.”

Lastly, her HT Golf Coach, Ben Rotgers, says, “Natalie has been taking golf lessons from me for a few years. She had always been a very athletic young lady and showed a great deal of talent from early on. She always has a positive attitude and even sometimes having a bad hole doesn’t keep her down. She always comes back and finishes strong. She is always positive with the other players although being young on the team she is one of the leaders that keep spirits high. Natalie’s skills keep getting better each year and I am expecting great things for her golf game in the future.

Natalie is also a great student-athlete that even though doing dual-sports that take a lot of time she works hard and excels in her studies!”

We wish Natalie the best of luck in the rest of the swim season and look forward to reading more about her success in the future!
