Undefeated Bowling Green Purples continue dominating

BOWLING GREEN, Ky — Without even one game played in the regular league in the 14th district of Kentucky, the Bowling Green Purples have shown that they are the favorites for regional champions, a top-15 spot in the Kentucky rankings and a deep playoff run in the upcoming season.

The head coaches of the team in Clubb and Sherril have shown great skill and persistence in keeping the team together after the unfortunate loss of last year deep in the playoffs by the Ballard Bruins. The Purples are ready to repeat a spectacular season, hoping to avoid the negative outcome this time.

The Purples have started their season with a perfect record of five wins and zero losses, 366 points scored and only 250 allowed, as well as No. 16 in the Kentucky state rankings. After surviving the great matchup against the Christian County Colonels from Hopkinsville on Dec. 14, a reasonable claim is that the Purples are not only dominating smaller teams, but they are also ready to face adversity.

A 61-59 victory against the Colonels was enough to seal the final win on this early five-game winning streak and keep them going for the upcoming matchup against the Grayson County Cougars, who have a 3-2 record.

It will not be surprising if this is not the first time you heard about the Bowling Green Purples. They were one of the most talked about Kentucky group of players after the two consecutive blowouts in their five games.

The first victory was against the Elizabethtown Panthers with a score of 74-47, and the next one was a win against the Glasgow Scotties with an outstanding score of 97-42.

This is not only based on the fact that the Purples are showing dominance on the court, but also on the way they carry themselves outside of the gym. They possess humility, respect and a great sense of accountability.

“You can take a win like this and think you might have arrived,” Coach Sherrill said after a win against the Greenwood Gators. “A young basketball team might think that, but all we did tonight was proof that we could play with this team. Now we have to take this as a learning experience and get better.”

“Last year’s group played hard, but they were not as disciplined as us,” sophomore forward Elijah Starks said. “We played hard and we rebounded well, but we have still got things to work on.”

Last year, the players that wore the Bowling Green Purples jerseys had a great season and played extremely hard during the regular period, winning 24 games and losing only two. The winning percentage of 89% and the 5-0 league record got them the district championship, but they suffered a loss during the second game of the playoffs from the Ballard Bruins with a score of 61-53, a victory would have given the team a chance for the Final-4 and a possible state championship.

Every team is chasing the title, but the Purples have shown their identity and experience when the stakes are high.

During the 2016-17 season, the Purples won the state championship in Kentucky with an overall record of 36-2, a 95% winning percentage and a 9-0 league record. The final 67-56 win against the Cooper Jaguars from Union sealed the deal and led them to their first championship.

They have been chasing their second title ever since, and even though they have competed with many great groups of players, they did not have an equally dominating team. Many people believe that this has occurred up until now. Others think this is the usual five-game winning streak that the Purples are achieving nearly every year.

Regardless of all the outside noise, the players out of Bowling Green are playing one game at a time, and during this period, they keep winning and getting closer and closer to their final destination: another state championship title.
